There is a new player onboard making affordable selvadge denim.

They are called: Lawless Denim - www.ra-denim.com/
(want 20% off? use this: 20% off link *click* )

Jump right into a pair of jeans? Link goes directly to a private review of a sample made for free : http://gustinfriends.proboards.com/post/7700/thread

Basically you can get customized selvadge denim from the top mills for $79
The owners seem like good people with long history in making clothes - craftsmen from my eyes.

Nice denims and cool heavy shirts is hot now, and they add things fast, like 2 styles chinos, one with a chinc in the back. Get them in custom dyed olive selvadge!

Many people from this board have gathered in a forum more pointed towards denim, and that can be found here: http://gustinfriends.proboards.com/

There's a huge buzz about Lawless on the Gustin Friends board. I got sucked in and ordered 18.5oz jeans, a wool shirt and a denim waistcoat for $195, including $75 postage. Crazy money.

That offer's stopped now, but the prices are still so low that they make Gustin look greedy.

Having said that, deliveries are only starting to filter through now, but the signs are positive and the owner and his staff are very approachable and helpful. Definitely worth a look.

Went for the 18oz Kuroki in regular fit with button fly, copper and black copper metalwork, bronze stitching, koi carp patch. Went none-cuffing length on this occasion with 32" leg and double-stitching. Cost only £40 all in, so not too much of a risk - the fit seems a little more low-rise than Gustin - so I'm look foward to see how they turn out. I do wonder, given the influx they'll have had with the introductory offer and the amount of personalisation on offer, they'll be able keep the six to eight week delivery promise...

To clarify - Lawless had a 50% off their low prices for a short while. That has ended now. (use my link and get 20% off then...wheeee)

The company uses old authentic machines like union special and singer, and they use alot of tripple stitching and bartacking that we have come to love.

look at the chinos maybe?

I also forgot, basically you can use all fabrics for whatever you want, like 18oz denim as a pair of chinos, 10oz herringbone as a type-2 jacket and so on.

That's well noted, Superfluous, and absolutely valid to point out, but to be fair to Lawless it has been extensively addressed on the Gustin Friends board, dealt with apparently honestly by Lawless, and people are giving them the benefit of the doubt.

I'm happy enough to take a punt on them, but the proof will be in the pudding when the stuff turns up.

I don't read the Gustin forum, but I agree that "the proof will be in the pudding." I hope the pudding is tasty.

I don't read the Gustin forum

To be clear, I mean the Gustin Friends forum Griff links to above, not the Gustin forum.

There's been quite a controversy over the actual Gustin forum as they started banning people (including me) from accessing it, but without admitting it. I haven't been able to get into it for two months or so and apparently it's dying a death, with most people moving to the new Friends board, which has in reality become more of a Lawless board now.

Gustin didn't do themselves any favours with that trick, and I've pretty much lost interest in them since then.

If you think $79 is too big of a gamble, thats up to you.

I link directly to a review-thread by people we know and trust that has been amongst us for years. Basically some of them bought jeans from kickstarter, and some got jeans as samples.

I will wait for my first order to arrive before saying if this is a good brand, or not so good.
In the meantime im following the owners journey that he shares with us, setting up a new site, crating new patterns (shirts) based on what we ask of him....shopping for new material, specifically getting what we ask for and so on.

I am also interested about Lawless wool shirt. But is it a really shirt? According to their site it should have some of their classic designs, so it should be a shirt, right? What bothers me is that I can not imagine to wear wool in contact with my skin, should be itchy as hell?

Yeah. For me, almost all of the fabrics are too heavy for a normal shirt so I will be wearing a t-shirt under and wear them more as over-sweaters/jackets.

Nice detailed review Griff. They look good on you and I too am looking forward to my 18oz ones.

It's impossible to get past that low price. Assuming the quality remains high, things should get even better once more materials come on stream.

I'd be surprised if they can keep to the 6-8 weeks turnaround, as they must have been swamped with the 50% offer.

I also hope they can combine two or more items in shipping, so us overseas guys save a little on fees. They seem more helpful and amenable than Gustin, so here's hoping.
