I watched a neat documentary last night on TCM about Lana Turner. I believe it was called 'Lana Turner: A Daughter's Memoir' and it was quite illuminating. Although I had often enjoyed Lana's movies, especially the sultry The Postman Always Rings Twice, I'd never really known very much about her life or career.
The documentary has extensive interviews with her daughter Cheryl as well as Hollywood friends and colleagues like Robert Stack. Turner's turbulent private life is well covered- she was married seven times- as well as the scandal of her daughter Cheryl actually killing her Mom's boyfriend Johnny Stompanato with a kitchen knife during a domestic quarrel! Steamy stuff...
Troubled by alcoholism and unhappy personal relationships but one of the great Stars of the day and breathtakingly beautiful, Lana Turner's story still fascinates. From her "discovery" in a Hollywood ice cream parlor at fifteen to her first screen test- actually shown- to her later triumphs and tragedies, I'm glad I watched this one.
Recommended if you're a fan of the fabulous Lana Turner.
