Wonderful hat, D-Day_Doll. What a stroke of luck to find it - and at such a price! What does it feel liike to wear it? I should think it would dictate an elegance and economy of movement.

For today, a simple, lace-trimmed chapeau for casual wear:

Great Thread, Warbaby. The postcard pictures are wonderful.

D-Day-Doll, I love the pictures and the setting. Where were they taken?

LOOOVE these big over the top hat postcards!!

If I was around back then, I'd have probably worn 'em! A favorite film for that era of the big hats is "Hello Dolly". Barbra Streisand wore the BEST clothes and hats in that film! Another was "Titanic", Kate Winslet had a really wonderful large hat in a scene where she was stepping out of a car I think it was.

Probably not surprising, I do have a vintage 40s hat with two dead birds on it.

I have only one really big hat, not vintage though...

I got it like maybe almost 16 years ago from the J. Peterman Co. I call it my 90s does 20s hat. Just wore it again Thursday in fact.

I love your bird hat, chanteuseCarey - it's so whimsical and bizarre (at least to our modern eyes), yet it's really quite attractive.

I don't have any images of hats with birds, but here are some serious feathers:

I love a big hat!

Particularly if it's one of these sweeping, beplumed numbers teamed with a trim, long, slim sillouette c. 1910 - 1912. They balance each other quite nicely!

Yes, that's the sort of thing, Warbaby! Hobble skirts also increased the sleekness of the sillouette (although they did nothing for womens' ability to get around). He did do some smaller turban type pieces too, to be fair, and promoted the movement to the smaller, neater head shape that reached its high point in the 20s.

Here are some postcards of the period, from a friend's collection:

(A tame one - many of the others get rather saucy).

You could do a whole collection just on postcards poking fun at big hats:

I love the styles of that era too. Actually "my" decades are 1910s-early 1960s as far as style goes. I wore my straw hat with a big black scarf tied around it on Thursday with a scarf tied around it and into bow and the ends hanging down. People do look oddly at you today. I don't know if it was the hat alone or the big bow. I want to decorate a hat sumptuously with fake or dried flowers, fake fruits and maybe a bird nippling at the fruit. I've been saying I'm going to do this for over 15 years.

Very inspiring photos and illustrations. I can see how the looks can be modified to 20s-40s styles.

Today's hat is simple straw number. Note the volume of the lady's hair - big enough to fill a really big hat and balance the size, as well as to keep the hat relatively stable. When I run out of Edwardian hat photos, I'll post a few of the hair styles from the era, most of which seemed to be designed with big hats in mind.

I LIKE it...

If I fluffed my perm out some, and wore a tie with one of my jackets, this could be me...:)
