My grandmother had a VERY old box of Sobraine cigarettes that she was keeping as a souvenir, however my very young mother and uncle decided that they would smoke them.
I believe that they were severely punished!
Ha ha, although i shouldn't laugh, but i have an extremely old packet of unopened Lucky Strikes in my cabinet which i have had to hide from intrigued, prying little fingers! Perhaps i should make them smoke one, that would probably put them off for life!
I think that it's very sexy to see a vintage woman smoking (and some men). In fact their is an entire fetish genre devoted to the subject. While it is dangerous, ages you and has negative effects on your health...it also lends a feeling of intrigue and mystery of the era. For me it portrays the imagery of the femme fatale and the bombshells of the 1950s and 40s. I also feel like if we must indulge we should do it in moderation.
There are many things people do that is bad for them...eating meat, drinking, breathing polluted air, eating food jacked full of pesticides and hormones, eating fish, brushing their teeth with fluoride and it goes on and on and on. It is hard to believe that we are all perfect. Having a drag here and there may, but probably won't be the thing that kills me.
Firstly: I do smoke, although never more than 5 a day, on average 2, sometimes not at all.
I simply enjoy the taste of a cigarette, just like I enjoy a fine glass of wine or champagne (or two or three ... ).
If I do go out to a fine place, such as the theatre, for example:
I use a cigarette holder.
The cigarette actually tastes better, it looks less 'cheap', but more importantly: my fingers do not take on the smell of the smoke.
I also carry the cigarettes in a case.
As I do not smoke much, I purchase a brand that tastes nice, meaning they are usually rather expensive and I have to get them from a specialist store. Therefore I do not want to display the packet openly as could look like I am showing off (which I don't!)
Regarding the topic's question about classy or sexy:
I am afraid there is not much style and class remining nowadays anyway, no matter what subject, at least in the area where I currently live.
Seeing women pushing a pram, mobile phone in one hand and a cigarette in the other does not display class nor dignity.
The smoking ban in public houses (pubs) has made it rather awkward for ladies to smoke. I am rather old fashioned in some of my views, I know, but standing outside a Pub with a cigarette, being a female, always makes one feel like a 'hooker'.
Although there is a plus side to the ban: you do talk to people you would normally not talk to if you wouldn't have had to go outside for that quick 'fix'. Additionally, its always an excellent excuse to dissapear when a conversation becomes uncomfortable, for whatever reason
At the end of it, as many of you have said: a lady remains a lady, no matter what she does.
This may sound shallow or even stupid to most modern-minded people today, but I do think it still gives an air of sexuality and mystery, whether it be a sophisticated lady or a rough-edged tomboy... Personally, I'm a relatively light smoker (about 2 packs a month, give or take). Also, I plan on buying a nice little formal cigarette holder for myself soon, as well as a case and lighter.
