I vaguely remember reading either here or on the vintageleatherjackets blogspot those little bios of the old time manufacturers. It seemed like there was no shortage of drama and feuding among jacket manufacturers even back then. Seems to just come with the industry!

Interesting read, thanks for posting. Think of the huge numbers of jackets produced. Isn't 1000 a week mentioned. Would like to know about the number of workers needed to do that sort of production. I think I have a LW Foster non-military jacket. Interesting. Thanks

I see that they mention a peak production of 3,000 jackets per week! Wow! Wish someone would stumble upon a warehouse full of unissued 1950's G-1's the way they sometimes do with those British Mk VII gas mask bags.
They also specifically mention "U.S. Navy" perforated onto the windflap. I wonder if that was one of the specs that LW Foster convinced the inspectors could be modified to a simpler "U.S.N."

The numbers are staggering. No wonder the stitching wasn't always very impressive. I would assume that they would bring in extra workers to meet these contract dates and then shrink back for their on-going work. It was also noted that they had trouble receiving the goat skins and thus could not meet the original deadlines.
