Switching gears. I can't remember if I posted this one before, it's a very old (I think) hand forged full tang Bowie I found at an antique store for $25. I'm guessing the handle - which shows worm damage - is mesquite. The scabbard had a leather thong at the top and frills at the end, both of which crumbled before I got it home.

.

At 16" it is a short sword or machete, and is my go-to all purpose hiking blade.

JG,

Sure like that butcher knife!

First knife you posted sure has the look of something from south of the border!

Thx for posts!

Thank YOU.

The butcher knife reminds me of the ones my Portuguese grandfather made.

I agree, the Bowie looks to be old Spanish/Mexican make to me, but I'm grossly lacking in knowledge about this type of knife ;-)

Glad to have a concurring opinion.

Renault, have you checked out the barrel knifes? Very cool, but often pricey. I posted a couple here some time back.

Mr. Godfrey!

What a neat looking knife!!!! Here we call that style a "Barlow". A very classic and traditional knife you have there! Congratulations on the win!!!

Once again I say, well done!!

A friend of mine, Per Thoresen, has written a couple of articles about barrel knives in English on his (Norwegian) knife blog:

http://kniver.blogspot.no/search/label/Barrel knives and http://kniver.blogspot.no/search/label/Barrel knives 2

More pictures in these articles (in Norwegian): http://kniver.blogspot.no/search/label/Tønnekniver http://kniver.blogspot.no/search/label/Tønnekniver 2 and
http://kniver.blogspot.no/search/label/Tønnekniver utenom Sverige

Per's blog is a very good source for Norwegian and Scandinavian knife traditions, he is one of the most knowledgeable world wide on these subjects. Mostly in Norwegian, and Google Translate is not too reliable on this subject ("blad" in Norwegian means both "blade" and "magazine" in English, for example), but a lot of great pictures.

And in all modesty: My own web site, mostly about the Meldal knife tradition, also in Norwegian http://www.murul.no/

I have read at least one of the Thoresen barrel knife articles, and found it very informative. There is an eBay buyers guide also, I think.

I will check your page out as well. Thank you!
