My mom must have really liked him because she named me after him. Hard to believe he is almost 100!

I haven't seen all his movies, but for me "Paths of Glory" and "Out of the Past" standout as he shows great range and (and I'll just say it) no hamming it up in these (which he does a bit in some of his movies). At his best, he was an outstanding actor.

For me, a movie with Kirk in it is always watchable but 3 stand out;
' Lust For Life' ...was/is an incredible movie.
'There was a crooked man ' ....always great fun.
'The final countdown' ..very 80's but exciting & poses some interesting questions.

I always enjoyed the roles he played in The Detective Story, Seven Days in May and Paths of Glory...not to mention "No...I'm Spartacus!".

Spartacus, of course . . . but he was willing to have some fun too. There was a goofy Roadrunner-esque comedy directed by Hal Needham in 1979, The Villain, with Ann-Margret, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Paul Lynde (!).

Lust for Life most definitely. And why aren't any of his films on TCM today? Expected to see at least something.

Wow, so many great films. Some of my Favorites are Detective Story, In Harms Way, Paths of Glory, Spartacus, The Big Sky, Ace in the Hole, Gunfight at the OK Corral, The War Wagon, Draw, and Tough Guys. He and Burt Lancaster looked like they enjoyed filming Tough Guys.

I recently saw a documentary about him and how his career was closely allied with Burt Lancaster (my personal favorite) and their "friendly professional competition." Back in my boyhood days I recall Spartacus and always thought he was the consumate "manly man."
