Was expressing my opinion on the whimpy,desk jockey Rolex wearing snobs on a watch forum,the thread was what Rolex do you wear while driving your car(what a joke),many of the pic`s were young spoiled kids with their arms hanging out of their Porsches,BMWs,etc,sporting 9,000.00 Rolex watches!!!Give me a break,what a bunch of self centered human beings we have in this country.When I bought my first Rolex 41 years ago I had to wait for 2 pay checks to buy it,and it was only $60.00 USED!.Back then it was just a good durable wrist watch,not some symble of wealth,status or what have you..I guess it raised the hackles on these people.Oh well I guess I am getting to old to tolerate this behavior......

I don't think a Rolex is necessarily a symbol of wealth--I got my Submariner because I dive and, at the time, it was the watch of my dreams. Almost all the professional divers wore them. It wasn't $60...but, it does self-wind. And, as an owner and previous (and future) owner of several higher priced, high performance vehicles, I don't think the watch is making people snobs.

Many of the watch forums are really just check my bling forums. For folks posting here I would think the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors would be along the right lines. It is geared for lovers of horology and the ability of the folks to ID watches and clocks is amazing. It is a board that does not discuss value of items so it does not appeal to the trendy crowd. There are all types of forums, I hope you find one that is right for you.

If I have crossed the lines by advocating the above non-profit corporation's forum I would understand if the post needs to be deleted.

With what I wrote, I hope your take away was that the posters in your former forum were just snobs, not that I was bragging...I don't take pictures of my watch and really just think of it as a tool for counting hours, minutes and seconds. Sounds like the former forum was full of posers...don't blame the watch, blame the people.

This thread probably would be better suited for the Observation Bar, methinks.

Personally, and I say this with no intent to offend fans of Rolex or any other watch, I find Rolex and many other "luxury" watches ugly as sin. As with many things, the vintage ones are much classier and nicer, but generally I find them very ugly indeed.

I've handled and examined perhaps thousands of Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philipe, Breitling and other such absurdly expensive watches, and generally find them gaudy and hideous. We have a joke at my port about expensive watches; the uglier it is, the more expensive it is!

Breitling is by far the worst of the lot with their massive dinner plate sized watches with their over the top, ostentatious designs and materials, and usually on the wrists of some of the most obnoxious, self-obsessed egotists you've ever met. Seizing one of those from such a shallow boorish oaf is a pleasure indeed!

Give me a nice elegant vintage pocket watch any day!

Agree,on the elegant pocket watch, I have pulled out my Illinois RR Grade Bunn Special now that`s a watch..The height of American watch making..

Online forums are a mix of cool folks, morons, and punks. I think I've been put on "timeouts" in just about every forum I frequent at one point or another. Although it's been a while, I have tried to learn to give up on the arguing and falling into the troll traps. Any forum (even this one has it) where people show their expensive items will have show-offs. Just let them be - most will see them for the nimrods that they are. If you take the bait, you're going to get angry and booted.

As far as Rolex watches being ugly I tend to disagree. I think the Submariner and the newer style Oysters are nice sports watches but they are sprts watches. For work (other than diving) or formal a square cased Rolex like the Sterling is one of the nicest watch designs I have seen.

I was a moderator and co-administrator at a large watch forum and "kicked myself out of it" because of the Rolex guys. Don´t get me wrong, nothing´s wrong with a Rolex if you can afford it. I got myself four in a row but sold them all because of the "Rolex-only" bunch. Although there are a lot of nice people (the one´s in this fine forum included) the Rolex wearers I´ve met (online and in person) were a bunch of ignorant show offs with no interest in horology at all. The hardly knew how a mechanic watch works but surely knew that Rolex builds the best, because of what reason ever. [huh]

Please don´t take my rant as an offense, it´s just personal experience. I might even still buy a Rolex one day....

I wish your danish written language was a little better Butte , then you would be pleased to share my danish watch site, called vintage watch freaks.
Here we have of course younger men,who happens to like their Rolex`es in various models, but with modesty, and so many other members here have expensive watches too, without bragging at all, this makes it a good and human forum, to discuss watches this way.
I was given an Omega Speedmaster Professional by my father in 1973, and love this watch becourse of him giving it to me, but bragging of it would be very far from my personality to do so.
My every day beater is a Traser 6505 Tr3 Tritium watch, which allows me to see what time it is even in the darkest night, and on top it only winds 2 second a` week.
I have no idea why especially Rolex fans have this show off gene sitting in their left arm :O) best to be ignored

Rolex certainly does not build the best as you are aware,the older models which I have had quite a few are way out there in pricing I could not afford any vintage Rolex piece now.I am holding on to a 56 year old "Datejust",that will go to the grave with me.$6500.00 for a 1016 Explorer 1! I paid $465.00 for that watch in 1986 used.One of the major auction sites has ruined it for the older collector.

I am just at the point in learning about horology that I am dangerous. I pick up mechanical watches from thrift stores just about any time I see them. I gave gotten some nice Seikos, Gruens, Benus, Hamiltons, etc for dirt cheap prices.

I used to work with an obnoxious guy that showed off his Rolex. I used to bring back copies from overseas, and sell them to my less well off workers. One time an outsider came around and saw a few people wearing their "Rolex" watches, and commented to him, "Does everyone in this department wear Rolex watches?" He stopped wearing it after this comment. We had a good laugh out of this.
