I just cross checked the address on the web. It is in fact the address of the former J.W. Marriott mansion.

The hat in the box may or may not be one of his hats. It is a custom black homburg made by Brodt's of washington DC, formerly located at 423 11th st. NW.

yeah... that's why i'm iffy on the hat. It's also a different size than the borsalino I have from the same person that I know to be his.

The box is a Dobbs box, so it's different than this hat. The box was one of Marriott's for sure, and that's really why I bought it.

It's just a happy coincidence that the hat is so nice. (now if only it fit)

and 14th and G, the location of Sidney West, the shop on the hatbox shipping label, is a starbucks

I love those little custom ("benchmade" is a term I have heard)
hat makers' hats. There were so many- great craftsmen all
but forgotten. I have a nice Chelton homburg (NYC), a
Quality Hat Works homburg with an unbound edge and blocked
in dents (SF), and two fedoras from Andrew Gross (Oakland).
There must have been hundreds of them in the Golden Era.
They are the predecessors of the hat makers like Art and Steve
who make such fine hats today.
