Just when you thought you had seen it all . . . (Warning: Not for the fainthearted)

Well, in theory, every suede is made from full grain leather - you just remove the epidermis layer and voila, suede. Whether it's cut away or sanded, once you remove the surface, it's all suede from there. I mean, if that's the spin they're taking, technically, it's not incorrect, regardless of how horribly wrong it is.

With the shiny top layer, surface of the hide, goes ANY talk of grain as well, be it full, top or whatever.

Yeah but maybe the point is from higher up much closer to the grain since sanding off the grain first results in nubuck, sands it a little more you get a suede and these sanding process probably only taking microns in thickness. While split suede, probably a good 1.2mm or more already skimmed off. Just calling suede everyone would think it is a split.

What puzzled me more is the "chromed tanned shinki" part. So before they use the tannery since the hide is tanned old fashion way take 9months etc, but now a chrome tan from there like going to a steakhouse to order a tofu dish.

What puzzled me more is the "chromed tanned shinki" part. So before they use the tannery since the hide is tanned old fashion way take 9months etc, but now a chrome tan from there like going to a steakhouse to order a tofu dish.

Shinki are known to be very inconsistent with their offerings. I think that now that they have gotten more popular than they can handle, they are resorting to chrome-tanned leather to ramp up volume. But of course it needs to come with a marketing spiel to justify their high prices.

So the goal is really to get something of their better batches.

My fist thought too. I really don't care for the look on this. Totally the wrong jacket for it.

I don't mind this as it is in isolation. Reminds me of a period when The Clash wore 'Pollocked' clothes (though in their case, they'd been painting a rehearsal room or their squat or something, and what became a deliberate look started off accidental). The Stone Roses in turn took it a step further a decade later. The problem with what Schott are doing is when you see this on the rack, doubtless there'll be a dozen of them, each one identical. Which rather kills the effect. Couple of years ago, a major fashion chain here in London was retailing a jacket in this style with the legend "Be Yourself" painted on the back. There was something comical about a whole rail full of identical jackets just like that...

Looks like a denim version of those suit "jackets" you see on display in a tailor's window, designed to show the range of options and possibilities available - cloth, cut, lapel shape.... I wonder is this such a display model, or is it 'catwalk' perhaps?

I get the impression they are not a huge operation. I know of one manufacturer which chose not to offer Shinki because the latter couldn't guarantee a certain quantity to make it practical for the former.

Pretty much, they seem to be victims of their own success - not sure if that expression translates well

The Clash is absolutely true. They even were knicknamed “The Jackson Pollack Clash” In those formative years from all the paint splatter on their clothes and and other things

it would be almost perfect, but the design missed the pockets on the forearms. Just not thought through to the end, I would say.
