On July 2, 1937 (midnight GMT) Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan took off from Lae in the heavily loaded Electra. Their intended destination was Howland Island, a flat sliver of land 6,500 ft long and 1,600 ft wide, 10 ft high and 2,556 miles away. Their last known position report was near the Nukumanu Islands, about 800 miles into the flight. The United States Coast Guard cutter Itasca was on station at Howland, assigned to communicate with Earhart's Lockheed Electra 10E and guide them to the island once they arrived in the vicinity.

At 19:30 GMT the following transmission was received from the Electra at maximum strength...
"KHAQQ calling Itasca. We must be on you but cannot see you...gas is running low..."

Her last known radio transmission was at 8:43 am and Earhart broadcast
"We are running on the line north and south 157 337. We will repeat this message. We will repeat this on 6210 kilocycles. Wait".

One of the world's great mysteries. All the theories, speculations, rumors, and stories sure make for interesting discussions. Some day maybe there will be some solid evidence found to once and for all answer the question: "What ever happened to Amelia Earhart ?"

She did survive it. She ended up a captive of the Japanese on Guam and was later killed by them for security/coverup reasons. There has been a full doco on cable on this "disappearance" thing with eyewitnesses who saw her in Guam in captivity.

That would be Saipan where it is claimed her breifcase and plane were found and she was held in captivity.

I bet these guys know where Jimmy Hoffa is buried, too. It's interesting that no one had a camera or thought to save any of the papers from the briefcase. The story about pouring gas on the plane and then having a P-38 fly by and shoot it to set the fire was really something. Don't you think there would have been a better way to destroy the plane? Sounds a little fishy to me.

I thought I read somewhere that there were a few people that have claimed to have heard her radio distress calls after she crashed, but were largely ignored.

I personally believe that she survived the crash, but she died on the island. Plus, I think that she crashed on Nikumaroro (then Gardner Island). There seems to be some "evidence" that points to that.

This will forever be an interesting mystery for generations to come. I just hope that people don't forget her.

She was quite before her time. A very feminine but strong personality in a field dominated by men, and married to a rather strong character as well. She would have been extremely interesting to talk to in older age had she survived that world trip.

I saw a programme on TV that detailed several ham radio operators receiving distress calls indicating they'd ditched on an "island", basically a strip of land subject to tidal coverage, and that the aircraft was partially submerged. They reported the messages but were told by the "authorities" that they were likely hoaxes. I'll try to find a link.

Yes his voice is a little funny.
As far as TIGHAR I don't put any stock in anything they say. If she had crashed on that island she would have been found along time ago. First of all in Oct of 37 the British sent an expedition there to see if Gardner Island was suitable for colonization and found nothing.
In 1938, Nikumaroro (Gardner) was colonized as part of the Phoenix Islands Settlement Scheme into an economically self-sufficient coconut plantation and a village was established near the north end of the island. The colony lasted until 1963. On the South end of the island TIGHAR claimes to have found a scattering of camp fires built by a castaway. When asked why a castaway would build so many campfires in 7 different places their theory is that they were built to keep the Strawberry Crabs out of the camp site. They have forgot to mention that a colony was on the island for 25 years after she supposedly crashed there.
