And that's why I don't bother with veg tan or naked finish anymore. It will probably be fine if presoaked though.

I'm looking to use their finished lightweight goatskin for my jean jacket but they have some full grain roughout (NOT split suede) options that are very attractive. I just don't know what the upkeep will be like. I'd really like this to be my one and only jean jacket, at least in leather.

My incoming Masaye will be just regular no pre soak but with a coating. There are too many things this month for me to worry about so I will leave that one out for now.

Full grain rough out are really tough. Not much need for up keep either. Just a quick brush will get rid of just about every stain/mark/dirt. I know Golden Bear isn't praised much around here but I have their goat rough out jackets forever and they've been through a lot. I didn't know how to up keep them until I saw a Youtube video it just brushing with a boot brush. And everything comes out. It handles water like a champ. The only thing is that they are thinner about 2.5 to 3 oz. I am sure the rough out JL uses is much the same given their close proximity.

This gives me an idea for a 5oz goat rough out... unlined... Damn it why did I see this post...

It's about time rough out suede gets some love...

I did ask JL about doing a goat rough out but they said it's rather flat on the roughout side, not much nap.

I was recommended their 3.25oz steerhide roughout which shows much more texture (from their IG).

I like how it looks like a moleskin or flannel. But I also like how goatskin is light and basically needs no care either...

I have a stock M500 with the welt pockets in the goat rough out suede. The nap is definitely not long. But theres still shadows when I brushed one one way and the other the other way:

I’ve been looking for something with a Western flare in suede for a while now. I thought about doing the Aero Wilderness in their rust suede but it might be a bit of gamble since I don’t know either that pattern or the leather. To be continued…

Amazing jackets as always Canuck!
Thanks. And hey you’re back! Post some pics of your car coats Please. I’ve been looking at some used JL car coats on fleaBay to get an idea of what their button coats are like.

Lurk from time to time, I think I got all the jackets I ever need at this point.

My jackets are languishing in my closet, CA weather doesn't afford much opportunity to wear them so they haven't changed much.

Nice one. Wilderness right? I went with the broken weave tweed instead. But a Wilderness is definitely still on my radar. I just haven't seen one out in the wild so I am really not sure what it is.

It's been warm here too. Can't imagine how warm it gets further south. I ain't complaining though. As much as I love jackets I also prefer warmth over wet cold. Haha.

That’s part of why I ordered! Hadn’t seen one on anybody, so I figured I’d be the first.

How have all of you with custom jackets from JL corresponded with them? I’ve emailed them numerous times with no response. I don’t mind calling but feel there is a greater chance of error through the phone than written emails.

Here is what I gotta say about JL. First they are a small shop so don't expect the same Aero's army of customer service and production lead time. But they will always answer. And the things they can do other makers simply cannot. They have been able to put together every single possible leather I've thrown at them, from thin to thick, from soft to hard, with great results. If they can't do something they'll let you know up front. Once it's decided, it's just waiting for it to get made.
Stock patterns will get much faster lead times than custom patterns. Again they are small shop and just have one person doing the pattern. And most people go there for custom jackets, so the line is long. The money is in the patterns in JL jackets. Once you put it on you will see the difference.
My incoming JL Barneveld Remix, in 4.5oz shrunken sheepskin. This leather is very hard to work with, stretchy af. But they did it.

Yeah JL is not a huge place with a fulltime dedicated customer service person let alone staff, but they do typically respond to emails. When in doubt, give them a call, they're extremely accommodating.

Allan was the go to guy for years. He retired and moved back to NOLA several years ago. He may have gone back to JL temporarily. It's been a while since I talked with him, so I don't remember for sure. As others have said, it is a small shop. I'm surprised they get jackets done as quickly as they do.

Heard from Allan a little while ago:

"Hi Ron,

Just wanted to give you an update on me. I spend about a month or so a year in New Orleans. I am still at the shop two days a week sometimes three days. I still love what I do and just can't get it out of my blood. We have been so busy (not complaining) this year. And yes, our website should be up and running by the end of November.
Always appreciate your kind words and support.

Regard's,
Alan"
