Metal detectors at banks don't like my fountain pen, my pocket watch and, when I'm with it, my camera!! But never any trouble with hat.

The last time I was the airport my hat set off the scanner more than once when I walked through. Finally, when I was stripped of all metal, and walked through again, the scanner still said something metal was on me. I took off my Fed IV and passed it through the arch and it set the scanner alarm.

I just shrugged my shoulders, not wanting to get into the explanation of the metal reeded sweatband in the hat. The guy operating the scanner just handed me the hat back and let me through. How do you hide anything dangerous in a fedora, anyway, when the hat looks and weighs normal (rhetorical question)?

Taking off my VS hat is putting on my disguise. People don't recognize me anymore without it. The banks have never complained that I wear it, though there is such a hat and sunglasses (and cell phone off) sign on the door and at the counter. I figure I'm doing them a favor. If I had it in me to rob the bank and they had to describe the perpetrator, that red hat would be a godsend. I'm average height, thin, with an unremarkable beard and unremarkable hair. If I didn't wear the hat, my police description would read like half the guys in town. Fortunately for law enforcement I suppose, I put considerable effort into being easily describable.

So you could rob a bank with it on, and not wear it after that, and no one would be able to identify you! But then you'd never be able to wear it again. Not a good trade-off!:p:D

Scottyrocks,

In an old book about photography, Lancelot Vinning explained as he used, when a "Daily Mirror" reporter, to use the hat to take photos of forbidden places. This would be specially useful in court work. Or with executions of death penalties.

I wish I had the same outfit that Willie Nelson wore in "Barbarosa"

Not just to wear to the bank, though that would be fun, too

I'd just like to have the outfit

It would be great to saunter into the bank with a full size, beaver sombrero, pulled down low enough the cameras can't get through

In the imortal words of Woody Allen ... "Apt naturally. I have a gub."

Concerning hats at the bank, psychologically the part of the body that is most recognized is hair color, so wearing a hat obscures your hair. Hair color is very important in identification, someone can easily change their identity by changing their hair color.

just my explanation

P.S. I'm going to the bank today, and I will promptly remove my self-converted Cowboy to Fedora upon entering

Note to self - after robbing bank either dye hair or shave head.

The bank my wife worked at for several years wouldn't care if you wore a hat, sunglasses, a tutu, whatever... All money transactions were done via video monitors and the tubes. She basically worked with 5 other people in a windowless vault. Security guards let them into the room in the morning and escorted them out into the lobby in the evening. She hated it after working face to face in a small town bank for years, but enjoyed the security of not having the possibility of a gun in her face as well.

My local bank has a beautifully open, sun-lit interior with pretty tellers sitting behind the counter to assist you--behind an inch of armor glass! How the hell anyone could possibly stick that place up baffles me.

They built our bank in Portage in 2004, and there's no divider between the tellers and customers.
