I think I still want to pretend that this project is NOT moving forward. I still cling to the wish that if a "new" Thin Man has to be made, John Slattery will play Nick.

I had read Rachel Weisz was going to be Nora.

It's interesting that in all the performing arts it seems the motion picture is held to a higher scrutiny when reinterpreting original works. 0dd, I think.....

Slattery is not a bad idea.
He could probably play tough enough to an ex-rowdy Pinkerton man that married into like Hammett's Nick but urbane enough to make Powell fans happy.

Sincerely,
The Wolf

Remake?

I am confused as to why so many of the posts refer to this project as being a 'remake'?

The original film was a version of the book. As I see it, a new film (unless working from the original screenplay) is a new version of the original source (i.e. the book)

Any great book deserves to be brought to a new audience and a new film version is a fantastic vehicle for that.

Why shouldn't a film maker who loves a particular book adapt it for film?

Without reworkings of books that had previously been filmed we wouldn't have films such as the Hammer 'Dracula' or the recent version of 'True Grit'.

If the film maker is true to their source material then good luck to them.

I enjoyed the first three and it hit me like a ton of bricks, If this remake is done Debra Messing should play nora she looks just like Myrna Loy.

Great, now I finally have a list. ;)

..and, no. Johnny Depp .. he's to much of an "Arizona dream" to in the "Thin man".
(not to mention, every time I see him , I keep expecting that monkey from "Pirates" to hop in the picture alongside him) :)

Yeah, I saw on TCM these were on the other night, but unfortunately I had wife maintenance to take care of, and my DVR was too damn full with her Dateline and Lifetime crap!!!

A little preface - I never watched many "golden era" movies. My wife, 17 year old daughter and I came across the "Thin Man" marathon the other night and are pretty much hooked. We have watched the first three ("Another Thin Man" was what we watched last night). Really enjoyed the dialogue and understated sarcasm - and the Powell/Loy chemistry is a lot of fun to watch. Although we're "rookies" I would tend to be with those who think it would be really hard to duplicate that chemistry in a remake. Regardless, what a fun series!
