Yep. He signed up and now they have a team of writers. They're planning on combining two or three of the original films and adding musical numbers.

I'd be interested in seeing it, IF they weren't portraying Nick and Nora or retelling the story. If they came up with their own story and characters to be reminiscent of Hammett's duo, then I'd be okay.

On a similar note: Depp and Tim Burton are teaming up to do a film version of Dark Shadows ...

There 's nothing wrong with remakes per se, as has been pointed out The Maltese Falcon was the third version. The problem is that for some reason Hollywood has reached a stage in the evolution of the industry where is appears to be very difficult to make a good film. Of course casting Depp as Nick Charles does violence to the character as written in the movie and as done in the movie, which are themselves quite different. That's alright. The problem is that Hollywood would probably make the character so flamboyant that a viewer would have a hard time believing he could actually solve the crime.

I don't understand why they want to remake perfection. I couldn't see someone remaking the Maltese Falcon now.

Musical numbers. And I guess Asta will be animated.

This could be interesting...interesting or very bad. I'm hoping just interesting. With musical numbers, I really hope they don't butcher Nick and Nora. That could be painful to watch. If they do it right, it could be a flattering complement to the original series. Although nothing can replace the originals.

I am guardedly optimistic - Depp COULD play Nick, it all depends on who they cast for Nora and how they write her.

I also am guilty of dream-casting Nick and Nora with Raul Julia (yes, Gomez, but bear with me...) and Angelina Jolie, years ago.

Now of course Julia is passed on, and Jolie is desperately skinny, but I still think that they need an actress with a bit more edge than many nowadays. Jolie may still be the best of the bunch...? Not that I think she is particularly reminiscent of Loy, just she wouldn't necessarily be a disgrace to the part, rather as if they had been going back and forth between Loy and Stanwyck, you wouldn't get the same thing but you wouldn't want to put your eyes out either way.

I will despair outright if they use a Jessica Alba or a Kirsten Dunst.

This Rob Marshall director hasn't directed anything in the past that I'd be interested in, but is directing the latest Pirates of the Caribbean - maybe he'll borrow the leading lady from those. Keira Knightly never does a bad job.

Kiera Knightly may be good, but too darned skinny - and I really don't think that even she could pull off the role... *shrugs*
Carey Elwes, now that would have been interesting - Depp can probably pull it off, but I still have my doubts. 'course, since I've heard these rumours I've been waiting to wake up and find out it's all been a nightmare lol

Wait...they're making another Pirates of the Caribbean movie? I thought that was a trilogy that had seen its end?...

Somethings should never be touched and the Thin Man is one of them. When you really consider the films it wasn't Powell or Loy that made the movies so memorable, it was the way they played together and off of each other. That "chemistry" was organic and completely natural. No matter who they cast it won't be the same.

So many of today's actresses resemble middle-aged teenagers more than grown women, but if I had to choose someone for Nora it would be Julianne Moore.

I truly love the old Tin Man movies, they're my favorites of the era, but having said that, if anybody could do it, it's Depp. Hope it flies.

Maybe. Possibly. Perhaps...

Rachel McAdams for Nora.

EDIT: I've never seen The Thin Man, so I Googled it. If, by any chance, "The Thin Man" can only speak in barely intelligible mumbles, power whispers, if you will, maybe Christian Bale could pull off the role? He always acts the straight man.

THANK YOU! Bale is the very worst actor in the business. Can't understand a word he says in anything.

Johnny Depp in anything is a moneymaker. The guy could stand still and the women flock.

I agree though. Rachel is gorgeous and a good actress as well. She makes me smile.

Well I think that Depp could pull it off. He has experience playing a drunk, and can pull off the look without much effort. The hard part will be finding the right Nora. I has to be some one Depp already has on screen chemistry with so they can bounce their lines off of each other and make it look natural. Knightly may seem right from the chemestry stand point but I think that she is far too young. One that does come to mind and has grown greatly as an actress would be Christina Ricci.

I think that she & Depp could pull off the natural chemestry and she could do Justice to the character of Nora.
I'll be very interested to see how this will play out.

Cheers!
