John and Paul before the Beatles in an unreleased, till now, photo.
John is looking good in leather.

Yep. Before they made it in Hamburg all 4 members wore a lot of black leather. Had to get rid of it to become mainstream. Wore those silly suits instead.

That's a tough one to call. Sutcliffe and McCartney looked similar in some of those old photos. I'm leaning towards McCartney though, but curious what others think. Note that Lennon is wearing a leather jacket in this pic also.

I'm not sure, but I think that is actually Stuart "Stu" Sutcliffe, the real 5th Beatle!

It's Sutcliffe. Amazing how back in those days wearing black leather jackets was seen by the wider public as somehow transgressive. It's why Astrid Kirschner - Sutcliffe's girlfriend, who gave the band their mop top haircuts - was first intrigued by them when she saw the band on the Reeperbahn. Mind you, I seem to remember Harrison saying that in the UK their leather jackets were laughed at by audiences, so I don't think it took much to get them out of their suits (well, maybe Lennon required a bit of persuading).

You can well imagine them being laughed at in their leathers; they do look so young and posturing and funny back then.

Just to be clear (and I know it can get confusing when several pics are posted), I think the guy standing next to Lennon in the first pic is Paul. In the second pic with Lennon that is of course Stu Sutcliffe.

First pic is definitely Macca. It's come from a new book on The Fabs, and it's a hitherto unseen pic that cause a bit of a stir.

Not 100 % sure but I think that George´s leather jacket went at auction for a fair sum a while back.
Its true that Brian Epstein dispensed with the leather jacket look and got them into suits but the Stones had similar
fashion problems.
