I've been a big fan of this hat since I saw the movie "Joe Kidd" as a teenager. I could never find a suitable hat because the standard 6" crown left the telescope at 4 1/4" and it looked to short in proportion to the 4" brim. So I got a dark brown blank from Hatsupply.com and made my block about 6 3/8". I Liked the way the original had a flare at the top and while the brim looks flat, it has a slight snap at the back like a fedora.

I was pleased with the outcome and am working on the liner.

Now that's pretty cool, Mark. What material did you use for the block? I ask because I'm getting to the point with my block collection where I'm suspecting that it might be less expensive (and more satisfactory) to either make them myself or (better idea, really) hire a woodworker to make them for me. But what wood is best?

Any tips you can offer would be most appreciated.

TonyB, Here's a picture of my block. I used pine because it was around, but from what I've read most of the professional blocks are made of poplar because it's relatively easy to work and closed grain. My head is very long oval so I turn the blank on a lathe to the smallest dimension and then cut it in two add a piece of plywood and re-shape it to blend in. Other people on the board have used stacked pieces to very good effect as well. Someone posted recently on that method.

I've seen the picture elsewhere and it has the flare. I think the idiots doing the artwork cropped it.

I finished the lining on my hat and thought I'd post a pic.

It's the first time I've done one from scratch so it could use some improvements, but I think it'll do for the first one.

I did the embroidery too, and like the lining was a first for me.
