There is a nice article on Hendrix, MSN. Today marks the 40th year of his passing. What an amazing talent he had.

40 years! Geez!

I saw him live at the Waikiki Shell, at the foot of Diamond Head, in Honolulu, with a big silvery full moon shining down, in 1968. Amazing experience.

Saw him once at the Arena which was nest door to the original american bandstand studio with the "The Experience" first act was "The Soft Machine" and once with "Band of Gypsy's" at Temple U rock fest. The Dead was on the bill along with about a dozen others. After Jimi all the other performers became irrelevant.

Playing bass with Jimi in the Band of Gypsys was Billy Cox, who met Jimi during their Army days at Ft. Campbell, just north of Nashville. Billy still lives in Nashville, and functions as a Good Will Ambassodor for Jimi. He also still plays and does some session work. In 2009 he was inducted into the Muscians Hall of Fame.

An interesting footnote to Woodstock, Billy said he can be heard playing bass on the first five notes of Jimi's famous Woodstock "Star Spangled Banner". The rendition was completely impromptu according to Billy. He said he thought to himself at the time, "I realized we had not rehearsed this, I had better lay off." He laid off, Jimi laid on, and history was made.
