A couple years ago I got interested in the retro jeans. The Evisu japanese buckleback stuff was heavily counterfeited online. I got one pair & tho the tags , rivets & stitching were dead on, their was no selvage & they didnt really shrink.
The genuine stuff still goes for a coupl hundred bucks.
UrbanOutfitters had some selvage jeans for a while.

I have a spare pair of the H&M jeans w/ yellow selvage in a 34 waist if someone is looking for them. They came out around Halloween a couple years ago.

Jeans are tricky. Fit is everything. If they dont fit, theres little tailorign that can be done. And if they do fit, laundering will eventually shrink or destroy them. Retro khakis are far easier to manage.

Has anyone found any current made jeans comparable to the denim found in the jeans we wore in the 50?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s and 60?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s? I wore Levi?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s for years and watched their quality go down every time I bought a new pair. I switched to Wrangler 13MWZ?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s. Wranglers were pretty consistent for quite awhile, but they are now very hit or miss as far a quality. None of the new jeans seem to last near a long as I remember the jeans in the 50?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s through the early 70?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s. Anyone have any denim wisdom they can share? Thanks.

I second what BT says about Levis vintage line. I bought a pair in Japan that are very high quality, heavy denim and details like they used to make 'em. Even has the leather patch on the back. Down side is they're expensive. I haven't looked in the U.S. though...may be a bit cheaper. Good Luck!

Hmm......to get ACCURATE repros, you really will pay big bucks. I have several Levis and Lee repros, and they are great. I can't think of any affordable alternative. Original vinatge ones will cost you ridiculous $$ too!
Keep your eyes peeled on Ebay!

Denim wisdom

Denim wisdom? Don't get me going...

If you want jeans like the '50s and '60s (style, trimmings and material), one of the specialist vintage ranges (Levi's, Lee, Wrangler) is the option.

If you just want jeans that are in the same high quality selvedged, ringspun, (not 'blown') denim as the '50s and '60s then it's more or less Japan or nothing. Denime and Edwin spring immediately to mind, although Evisu have had their moments if you can suffer their 'style' There are a few gems out there, however. H&M in Europe did a tough pair of jeans a few years ago and brands like JCB and Caterpillar have had some good jeans made for them.

I think the point people often miss about the Vintage repro ranges from Levi, Lee and Wrangler is this...yes, they are expensive, but they will last you much, much longer than ordinary jeans. As well as looking and feeling incomparably better.

In Britain ordinary 501s cost around ?Ǭ£40-60. Levis repro vintage 501s cost around twice that, but will last you around 4 times as long. They are a bargain - really!

How do you buy Japan made jean in the US?

Is there some websites for the vintage Levi, Lee and Wranglers? Is it possible to buy the Japan jeans from here in the US?

Edwin-

Good point Alan- I have had Edwins and they're fantastic and last a long time- definitely a cheaper alternative to the L.... and W...s- if you can find them.

They're readily available in the UK but I don't know about retailers in the US.

I'm working for a vlothing company at present and we supply to a company called 'Tiger of Sweden'- a premium fashion brand. I was browsing the stock and found some dark/dry selvedge loose fit jeans and was quite impressed with them- problem is- my staff discount doesn't apply to this out-of-house brand... pooper!

Check out Edwins!

Although I don't know the vintage styles, I have some really heavy denim jeans from Carhart from Cabelas and also Cabelas own brand of jeans. Look under work and also casual.

http://www.cabelas.com/

I have also had good luck with their chinos, safari shirts and hiking shorts.

For really heavy duty pants and shorts Duluth Trading has some that are called Fire Hose Canvas

Hope this helps.

I tried on some Levi's 501 and the cut doesn't work on me for some reason. I'm not sure if the straight legs just make my legs look like twigs or if they sit on my hips wrong, but it looks funky. The only jeans that look right on me right now are from Hollister.
