Thanks for the responses.

No love for the untucked t-shirts, eh? I'd do it if I owned some high enough jeans and all these white t-shirts today were long enough.

A good bargain pair of high-rise, straight leg jeans are the current Levi's 505.

I bought a pair in New York recently at Dave's New York - formerly Dave's Army & Navy - in dry/rigid denim for just $28.00. They are very good quality denim, stiff and dark with that great unwashed denim sheen, just like the LVC jeans. Buy them long and roll them up, never wash them, and they'll look just like a pair of 40s Levi's.

I've worn the same style of plain Wrangler/Rustler jeans carried by WalMart now for...well, forever. Since the 70's. Straight leg, "regular fit", Natural waist (which on me is no more than 1" below my bellybutton). I look at pictures/movies of folks in jeans in the 30's-40's-50's, and their jeans usually don't look any different than mine do. They hang the same, and the waistline is the same. I don't see enough difference between these and "vintage" styles to justify buying them...especially since I can get the jeans I'm wearing now for $9.99 a pair! I just can't pay $50, $100, or more on a pair of pants. They're just jeans, for cryin' out loud! I do actual physical work for a living (well, not so much today...), and I wear jeans every day. The old styles with the cinch backs and such are neat, but there's no way I can justify that much money for any pair of pants.

I HAVE to wear a belt to hold my pants up, and it is TIGHT. I can't wear galluses (suspenders for those of you not in Kentucky). Well, I can, but I'm so used to having a tight belt, that it bothers me, and if I'm wearing a belt, I don't need suspenders.

By the way, I'm having to buy a whole new wardrobe lately, as I have lost about 40 pounds the last several months, and am down to a size 34 jean (and a large shirt, as opposed to 36 and XL...It's jus awful...):)

And JD died in '55, so he would have been wearing what we today,
would term, "vintage denim", not 2007 Mall Levis.
Not quite the same animal.

A pair of his jeans sold for $35,850.

As far as I know, 501s were worn by him in Rebel Without a Cause, and shrink to fits have been around a long time. But if you can direct me to any well made jeans in a similar pattern that don't cost a fortune, please do.

If you ever get the opportunity to compare a 1955 pair of 501s to a pair of 2007 Mall 501s, which you probably won't- you'd know what we're(I'm) talking about.
The denim is totally different and so's the pattern. The fading and wear is unlike the old ones- the new ones wear out way too fast.

as long as men wear men's jeans and women wear women's jeans I am fine with it.

Emos, wtf.

What's wrong with women wearing reasonably close-fitting (not uber-tight) straight-leg mens' jeans?

Okay but... can you find me a good deal on similar jeans? I don't really have much a choice beyond "2007 Mall 501s" and paying upwards of $100 for selvedge denim. (Which I think is ridiculous.)

The Wrangler "Cowboy Cut" "13MWZ" jeans have been recommended to me. I think they are supposed to be essentially the same as their jeans from the late '40's. I have a pair (they're like 25-30 bucks). They have the same rise as my regular Wranglers (about 12 1/2"), and fit pretty much the same, though the "Cowboy Cut" are fuller in the seat and upper thighs, but not by much.
