Jazz vinyl

Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this.

My dad is a jazz musician, tenor sax, VERY talented man. Way back when he was learning to play in the 50s, he used to buy Bird and Thelonious and all the greats on vinyl and play what they were playing... not to copy their style, just working out how they did what they did. Anyway, it means he's got all this stuff on vinyl, and is gradually replacing it with CDs so he can play them in the car.

Problem is what can he do with a couple of hundred vintage vinyl jazz LPs? All in original sleeves, all in the sort of condition you would expect a musician's vinyl collection ie pre-loved, pretty good nick for records older than I am! They're part of his - youth I guess; when I tried to list them on eBay people weren't willing to pay more then pennies for them, and to be honest I'd rather keep them myself - and I don't even LIKE bebop!

I just have no idea what to do with them.....

All I have to say is wow...

Mate, all I have say is wow. First, it's not rubbish so don't toss it as such. Dependent on the condition and who he has in his collection...it could be quite a project to convert those to MP3 and such. My suggestion is that you allow the public to enjoy it by donating it to a library or jazz museum where folks would. If I were there, I'd be asking you if I could look through it as some of those, I'm sure are bound to be some finds. Do you have a list? I'm a person that appreciates the vinyl first off and secondly the art that is jazz.

FG.

Forget the people on ebay. List them here on the forum in the classified section. At least you know the people here will appreciate them, care for them, and respect your dads collection.

My sister and I had quite a vinyl collection. When we decided we didn't want it anymore I took them to a local record shop, and the owner gave me a nice price for them and a few CDs in trade.

Thanks guys, I think I will do just that.

And FG the idea of the MP3s is a fantastic one, and in fact has given me an idea for a Christmas present for him....

It wasn't intended as a hint by the way! *blush* I didn't mean for anyone to think that...
I might even direct him to pop in here when he visits us and see if he can get some jazz chat going, he would LOVE to think that there is a second and third generation of young people into "his" music. Not that he's seriously old :)
I've told him if I win the lottery I'm going to set him up with a broadband connection and get him his own radio station to play all this stuff!

You don't even know me? lol

I have quite a collection of jazz albums (150 or so). I have been waiting to see if the tide changes and vinyl comes back in some way. I don't see that happening at all. I have framed some of the covers and keep the vinyl safely stashed but I think all I can hope to get is the memories of how it use to be whenever I listen to them. Some of that stuff has not made it to cd's and I seem to be the only one that cares. [huh]

Bebop, you've never spent any time in Manchester, have you...? (brief moment of concern that you may in fact be related to my dad....)

I think that's my real gripe - they're not "just" records. They're artefacts.

Anyway here goes...

Coltrane, "Like Someone In Love" -1967
Coltrane, "Soultrane" - 1968
Coltrane, "Giant Steps" - 1960
Coltrane Quartet, "Ballads" - 1962, back card cover has had a bit of a hard life!
Coltrane, "Coltrane" - at a huge cost of 32'!! - 1962 at a guess
Coltrane, "A Love Supreme" - 1964
"Chambers' Music" - John Coltrane Quartet feat. Paul Chambers, undated
Coltrane Live in Paris 1965
Coltrane, "Coltrane Jazz" undated.

This is just the stuff that *I* have here. If anyone is interested let me know, don't forget this is old-old vinyl and it weighs a ton :( so it would be expensive to post.... that's why I haven't put it as a classified, cos I'm not sure if anyone would want to actually buy the stuff considering the cost of postage!

I would DEFINITELY be interested in some of those. I'm a HUGE Coltrane fan. I love Coltrane!

FG - mum and dad are coming down to stay with us in a couple of weeks. I shall get him to send you a private message (nice introduction to the Lounge for him - he was saying on Sunday how much he'd love to check it out!) and talk 'Trane.

A subject I know nothing about ;)

Wow. I'm honestly sitting here, slack-jawed, at even that short list.

If you ever decide to post them up in the classifieds forum I'd definitely be tempted to take a look! I picked up my first Coltrane album a few months back and have absolutely fallen in love with it.

It's always neat to take a look through the vinyl collection of parents/grandparents/family. I have my great aunt's records (about 100 old big-band singles). We were very close and she worried that many of her more eclectic (read: eccentric) collections and items (in addition to the vinyl she also had odd ashtrays, woven birds, and strange glassware) wouldn't be protected once she was gone. Having those things to enjoy is almost like getting to know another side of my Aunt and her life.

On a sillier note, when we were younger my brother and I always enjoyed digging out some of the more "embarassing" items from our dad's collection whenever we went to spend the night at our grandparent's. When he came to pick us up we'd be sure to play him a selection of the things we'd found along with (what we thought was) hilarious commentary.

Good luck with finding a proper home for those items, whatever that may be! :)

Well, I went for it.

Dad's attitude is that they've been sat in my living room at the other end of the country for nearly two years and he hasn't missed 'em, so there they be, loitering in the Classified section.
