Jacket for a woman

With my new Aero jacket ordered (and my incessant thinking about its arrival) my wife has peaked her interest toward her first leather jacket. She is 5'4" tall, with an athletic and trim body. She is in her mid thirties. She seems to like the moto-style jackets best and she like the cognac color. Where should I go look to find the best bang for the buck? Price range for a starter jacket is $100-300 dollars. She wouldn't spend more than that because she is somewhat frugal. She likes buttery soft "thinner" leather and a trim/fitted cut. Recommendations?

So far we've checked Nordstrom's and Macy's...

It does seem like sources for good women's leather jackets are scarce. I've often wondered why the major manufactures such as Aero don't offer more for the ladies. Good luck with your search.

Look at Wilson's Leather if there is one in your area. Aero has a ladies' cafe racer listed at £400 if you can nail down sizing. Maybe contact Carrie at insurrection.

Thanks guys. Yes, I thought about Wilson's, but we no longer have them in our area. This will most likely be a mail order.

Take a look at the offerings of Schott. They have fitted lambskin moto-style jackets in several colors.

If you don't find a local source, Johnson Leathers in San Francisco has a lot of women's jackets.
They would also work with you to create anything.

Schott wasn't offering anything new in cognac that had a zipper in the center, which my wife prefers. But, your recommendation led to our eBay find. Hopefully it will turn out well.

Most of the manufacturers in that niche got started replicating military jackets (which, of course, by and large had no female version) or men's civilian jackets, and established themsevles that way. Women's jackets are very different from the male body, and they tend to vary in shape much mored significantly, which affects it. Much bigger challenge to pattern, for a much smaller market. Women by and large seem to be less interested in the sort of specs that those of us men in the niche prize, and tend to be more likely to be happier with what the fashion market provides. Of the vintage niche crowd, there aren't the same obvious fashion icons for women associated with leather jackets in the way there are for men, so many of the ladies won't think to look for leather. Add all these things together, and it begins to be obvious why few of the niche companies have made then investment in time and money necessary to bring women's patterns to market. Aero are beginning to do it, though. They already have two models on the website, and afaik they are planning more.

So no comments on the vintage Schott? I'm surprised. I told my wife "TFL IS FULL of professionals. They'll tell us about this jacket." What are your opinions?

From the size of the zip, I'd say post-60s. Reminds me of some of the Jelado designs or a very toned-down East West jacket.

Sounds like you already have it covered but I got my wife a ladies A-2 from US Wings that is pretty nicely made and is cut for a woman's figure. Not cognac and not a moto either.

I think ELC makes a cool looking WAC jacket, but cloth if I'm not mistaken.

Not precisely what you are looking for, but something worth looking at and might give you some ideas.

Good luck with your EBay find and your hunt!
