Ja Dubow 27798 (Platon) A-2 jacket review and pics

Heres my latest acquisition, one of Platon’s Dubow 27798 A-2s, in seal brown horsehide.
This one is a 42 (* see below), I am 5’10 trim, and it fits relatively well.
I could not go smaller, considering the Dubow pattern... (I recently tried on a new BK 1755 in a 40 and it was too small and short. Period. Awesome jacket though, one of the best repro A-2s I’ve ever seen).
Please excuse the pics. I will get around to taking better ones, but they do give a good indication of fit, and this one below... of colour,
Dubow27798 3.jpg

This is a ‘new’ pattern for me, it has slightly narrower shoulders and a slightly wider waist, easy torso… The back panel of this pattern is a bit smaller for a given size, compared to other contracts I am familiar with, but the front panels make up for it. Theres a bit of squeeze when lifting arms, but its not uncomfortable. All typical of the Dubow I believe.

The quality and workmanship are outstanding. Very neat and tidy.
Components and hardware are tops, as advertised and expected. I love the zipper, hell it looks good. Knit appears period correct (same as those found on BK jackets ???). I am not the world’s biggest fan of the contrasting berry, red knits, but these are not overly so... more berry-brown and subtle… so interestingly enough, they are growing on me.
I love the olive drab stitching, contrasting with the seal hide. Again, authentic enough and just looks great.

The leather feels like its the right weight and drapes well. Its not stiff, but wants to be worn and broken in. The colour is a mid seal brown... There are some variations in hue, in different panels, slightly mismatched, which I think adds character… Same for grain. Some areas have that pebbly grain popping through, other ares are a bit smoother. I recon this is going age and wear in beautifully.

* Now… This is a VERY special jacket. It is a long version. Before anyone gets excited… These are not generally available.
I spoke to Platon right in the beginning when they launched and he agreed to make me a 42 with some length added to body and sleeves.
Then there were delays and they changed their policy on this due to production and cost factors, but he held to his word, and in the end made this for me as a one-off.
Glad he did, as a std length 42 would have been too short for me for sure.
So, this is quite possible, the ONLY jacket like this in the world. Gold!

All in all, I am happy with the jacket… but I am a little unsure of the fit. I tend to be more broader shouldered/ trimmer torso, V-framed. This pattern is more A or H-framed. Plus I have a couple of jackets on the way, and do not plan on collecting jackets.
If you are 5'10, 5'11 or taller this could be perfect. PM me, I may move it. Would want to recoup monies spent at least, so this could be a winner for someone.

For the monies paid these are outstanding buys imo… The entire ‘package’ compares very well to any ELC, BK, Aero or even GW jacket (and I’ve owned numerous jackets from all… except BK, but I'm rectifying that ;) ).
If you’re in the market for a top-tier A-2… And this IS a top-tier A-2! Get one. Just double check and compare the std measurements with your favourite A-2 and make sure this pattern will work for you.
Large broad shoulders and trim waist… this may be a tricky pattern. That said, its still classic WW2 look-fit-authentic.
All depends of personal fit preferences and requirements also.
Thanks for reading!

Measurements for 42 long Approx:
Shoulders - 17.5" to 17.75"
Pit to pit front - 22.5” to 23"
Pit to pit back - 22”
Sleeve, from shoulder to end of cuff - 26.25”
Back length - 26"

Thanks for posting the review. I've read various threads about Platon's new enterprise, and wondered how that relates to BK and the whole Andy thing. Are we even sure they are two separate people (as opposed to, say, two personalities in the same mind), and not an attempt by Andy to rebrand BK products without the baggage?
IMHO, this A-2 looks too long for me (and I really do mean 'for me'); the extra body length seems to have visibly distorted the proportions of the jacket. I wonder how the length would be with high waisted pants?
Admittedly, not many people wear pants like that these days, and as a paying customer you are absolutely within your rights to have your jacket as long as you like. It could just be the height/angle of the camera. My body looks distorted when I try to take my own photo.
But I always wonder why people want expensive high quality reproduction vintage jackets, and then tinker with the pattern to get a more 'modern' fit (I'm not pointing the finger at you here, I'm mainly thinking of Diamond Dave).

One wonders Big J....
Regs length, its not as long as it looks in the photos... Its 26" down the back, which for a 42 is actually pretty normal for many A-2s.
I think another reason it looks that way, is that the lower torso, waist area is not as tapered as some other A-2s contracts.
Once it wears in and crashes up, it will mould and drape better Im sure.
Anyway, for me, adding an inch to length, if one happens to be a bit taller or lankier, is perfectly fine and still 100% authentic (originals of the same contract and size, can be found to vary a bit, in size, lengths and various details... so license taken by modern repro manufacturers is justifiable IMO).
You gotta be comfy in your high-end repro. I see no point or logic in spending tons of cash on a jacket that wears too short or baggy or whatever, because you don't want to mess with the pattern. I envy the guys who can wear an off the shelf size and it fits perfectly ;?

Yeah, absolutely could be the height/angle of the camera. When I take selfies, my legs always look about 20 inches.
My Aero A-2s are all size 50 with an extra inch of length (besides the fact they were never issued in size 50), I don't think one inch of length is a visible difference on a jacket so wide!
I was so fat.
How was dealing with Platon? I've heard good things about BK and Platon's jackets, but not so good things about them as people.
Coz on the one hand, there's LW's Stu, who sounds from his website like he could be a nightmare to deal with, but was actually very professional when I ordered my jacket, and at the other extreme, there's Andy who's reaching out to me as s non-customer to give me trouble.
Was Platon stress free and professional? I hope so. It could be the only edge he needs to get ahead of BK.

Hey Big J,
Yes, Platon was all business. He answered emails and sent me samples, no dramas... The whole process was easy, but you just have to be patient.
I recon just stay clear of the politics, it will put you off.
That BK Dubow 1755 I tried on a few weeks back was the best A-2 repro I have ever seen. I hope my BK is as good as that one, I will be well-pleased. Just look at Matts Dubow he just received on the 'other' forum... Its fantastic.
Anyway, as for Platons jacket, for the price and what you are getting... Best deal out there I recon.
I wore the jacket again last night and its growing on me more and more. Definitely could not get away with a regular size.

This may be a stupid question, but I’ve been out of the loop for a while. Which shop does Platon run?

this seems to be the most authentic A-2 option at this prince point available. Keeping it to just one contract makes total sense in re supplies and cost control. Even if the price goes up $100-150, its still a great deal in comparison to the higher end options.

Absolutely agree. Pics above don't do it justice. I've been meaning to take some better pics and do a bit more of a review, but just been too busy. I recently ordered a russet version also ;)
Lead time? I don't recall exactly, about 2 or 3 months... I think its best to forget about it. Its a small operation, so will take time, but well-worth it.
Platon sent me these recently, when enquiring about the russet version and his original...

Been five days since I paid for the Dubow, still no email from Platon. Are they having some holiday?

It was two months between payment and receiving my first email from Platon - think that’s just what you need to expect!
