... that make you happy!

Today while searching for threads about vintage cufflinks my father came into the room and said:

'You're some kind of freak, right?' (And he really meant that in a positive way)

'Yes, a bit different' , I answered

'Ok, then you'll probably will have more use for this than I.'

He than gave a pair of vintage golden cufflinks. They belonged to my great grandfather and have his initials on them. H and D. Now the interesting thing is that also my fathers, my grandfather AND my initials are H and D, so the cufflinks were handed down to each generation. I thinks they're a damn cool gift and I'll were them with pride!

Henrik

very neat Henry.
I always get nervous wearing heirloom stuff, though. I hope you actually get some use out of them.

could you post pictures?

Very cool, Henrik! I have several heirloom pieces that belonged to my grandfather and a few from my great-grandfather. They are among my most prized possessions. Wear these with pride...you're not only wearing history, you're wearing your history! Bonus points for your dad! :)

Great thread,

I have only a couple things that were my grandfather's, who lived in Potsdam till the war, and then near Dusseldorf: a pair of cuff links and a silk scarf. The scarf is starting to fray (it is probably from the mid-60s), but I'll keep wearing it till it disintegrates. The cuff links will go on forever.

Congratulations on having such a great link (sorry, couldn't resist :) ) to your family's history. I don't know how many times I see cufflinks on ebay described as "these were my grandfather's; he wore them for years" to which I mentally add, "but I'm a big loser and care nothing for my grandfather or my own family history".

Great story.
And I think that your father called you a freak (positive) to make light of a process that probably means more to him than he will admit....passing down the cuff links, a treasured heirloom, to his son.
Wear them in good health.

Boy, I agree! It pains me to see that stuff. If it were passed down to me over so many years, and even if I didn't know what to do with it, I would at least keep it for my next in kin.
