It's curtains for you, CURTAINS! (a homemaking thread)

I am an ok sew-by-hander but have no real idea how to use a machine (I made an apron way back in junior high home ec). However today I am undertaking a DIY-cafe curtain for my kitchen, which I intend to create with fabric glue and a rod!

What home projects have you undertaken successfully? Post pics!

I'm a beginner at a sewing machine. I can use one but I don't know how to use one to it's fullest potential. (I also have issues with winding the bobbin. Old sewing machine, no manual). I usually just make dresses and skirts for myself and the occasional button for my fiance. I made curtains for my new house this time last year and I found a lot of success with the hem of it by using bonding adhesive tape. I forgot the name of it but you iron it on and you get a really nice look without having to use a machine. (will try to upload some pictures)

My next project is going to be a slipcover for the couch. Hopefully it won't come out too bad.

Oh wow. I've made curtains, a canopy, table runners, placemats, napkins (in all kins of themes and colors), a shower curtain, pillows, Xmas tree skirt, stockings, and a ton of clothes.

If/When I get a new digital, I'll take a pic of my curtain.

I don't have batteries now and keep forgetting to buy some. For the most part, I've made curtains, my shower curtains, my toilet runner (like a teeny tiny table runner) my dog's bedding, which was great until the cat "expressed" himself on it. I've made a table cloth out of old curtains, pillows oh, and I recovered my bench but didn't like it so I took the upholstery off. I found some old pics in my library.

This was my bench after I covered it. I've since uncovered it and moved my bedroom to a different location.

Unfortunately, i have no pics right now as i am moving and everything is packed! I sewed a pair of pink priscilla curtains while i was waiting for my adopted son to be born. WE didn't know if our new baby was going to be a boy or girl, but i had a very strong intuition that it would be a girl. One night close to the birthmothers due date, i stayed up till 3:00am, turnng a set of candy stripe pink & white sheets into a lovely pair of curtains, complete with ruffles & tiebacks.The very next day, our baby was born.And of course, he was a boy! I still kept those curtains up till he was about 2 years old

I hope your curtains are going well! If you haven't finished them yet, you might pick up some Stitch Witchery(available at any Jo-Ann). It's a fusible tape that glues together two pieces of fabric when it's ironed. Use steam with it, it helps to activate the glue. It's great for hems. (it will come apart in the wash, btw, and need to be reapplied.)

Or do it by hand, I just saw that you are good at that. :eusa_doh:

I actually had to put the curtain project on hold since I couldn't find any fabric I liked! I just ordered some at www.reprodepot.com though, so as soon as it arrives I'll be gluing my fingers together in no time!

Do you think they have it at Michael's? There isn't a close Jo-Ann's around here.

I made some drapes for the kitchen. I'm still not done...But I'm almost finished. they are for my mom.

I have no closets (my bed is in it), and I have a lot of stuff, so I bought that 'metro shelving' and basically made sleves for them so I wouldnt have to see all my crap.

On top of the black far left I have two printers that I made dust cozys for cause my apt. is a dust magnet.

Below the poster is where I shelves my collection of childrens books, near dust free

My bathroom tiles are yellow! What where they thinking. It was hard finding a shower curtain for it, so I made my own (including punching in the washers for the curtain hooks). That caddie by the wall I draped in the leftover curtain fabric, to once again, cover crap lol

And here I thought I was the only one that covered their crap with mini curtains.

My whole sewing shelves are coved like that. My Deep freezer (in my bedroom) has a skirt on it, to make it look less bulky in there. Good to know I'm not the only one!

I bought an air conditioner this summer that I never put in the window (can you say L A Z EEEEE?) anyway, I covered it with some red silk and put a pillow on top, now it looks like an extra bench in my bedroom.

Miss Bella, don't be afraid of the machine, just get some scrap fabric and try 'er out!

BAH.. I'm one to talk! I have never sewn from a pattern and everything thus far has been done on a good o' 56 Kenmore. I asked for a new machine with a button holer last xmas and it's still in the box, I'm petrified of it, lol!

Miss Huff, have you tried looking online for a manual on your old machine? I would be totally lost without mine.

I have lots of projects going on, but since we're talking about curtains I'll show ya the vintage 40's ones I got on ebay a long time ago. They are not the right cut/size for my windows tho~ will have to be redone and I have not torn into them yet... still trying to figure out how I want them and don't want to ruin the fabric! They are SOOO dang cute!

I'm brand new to sewing as well...so for now, I've been practicing making pillow sheets....it's kind of funny how completing a simple project like that can make you so proud!
My biggest problem is that I love to just jump the gun...I want to make elaborate dresses NOW!
