items of clothing that make you cringe

This is just meant to be a bit of fun:
There are some items of clothing that elicit an almost physical revulsion from me.
But I don't know, call me a masochist, but I enjoy hating some of these things.
Prime example: raglan sleeved, shapeless leather jacket with a storm flap with multiple snaps and an elasticated waist. :yuck:
It's so thoroughly nasty. I think what makes it so horrible is that it is over-engineered as well as un-flattering.

What are the items of clothing that you love to hate?

I assume that this is strictly "vintage", right? (Otherwise there is way too much to hate.)

Now talking about 1920-40's (my timeframe) clothing, I have no passionate hatred for any garment, but there are some era-typical items that I personally could never wear:
straw boaters, bowler/derby hats, tassled shoes, full norfolk jackets.
They just don't fit my "vintage persona".

Genuine disgust is reserved for low-rise, tight "skinny" trousers that are fashionable currently.
Particularly in brick-red or saturated bright blue. Bah! Also these nasty ragged, volouminous scarve-things.

Red trousers on men, boat shoes (except on boats), bright madras, shorts worn with blazer ... basically most of what is called Preppy nowadays. Love the 1930s collegiate look though.

In terms of VINTAGE clothing, I don't think I could ever wear a bowler hat. But it doesn't make me *cringe* as such.

Fastuni you just described a good portion of my wardrobe! The Boaters, Derby and Norfolks haha! But my look is almost all teens-mid 20s so they fit me. I agree with the bright skinny pants.

What about when I'm playing baseball?

What makes me cringe?
Short sleeved dress shirts.
Button down collars on anyone over 12 years of age.
Brown belt with black shoes.
Fedoras with Hawaiian shirts.

I recognize not everyone shares my taste.

Bowties! I think it goes back, to when I was a kid, and had to wear a clipon version. I could not wait until I was old enough for a real tie!

I dislike dress shoes worn without socks, especially with a suit or sports jacket. The only version of this that looks acceptable to me, is khakis with casual boat shoes or slip-ons.

I don't think a bowler hat would go with my style, either, nor would a top hat. A homburg is about the oldest and most formal type of dress hat I could feel comfortable wearing, and I converted mine to a fedora over three years ago. I think my style is a little too modern to justify a bowler hat, most of the time. I don't have the clothes I see as being connected with top hats. I have no formal-wear, only two lounge suits and three sports jackets, and dress hats like fedoras I believe to fit in more with these clothes. A bowler isn't incorrect with a lounge suit, though.

I see this at my university, occasionally. I think red is too bright, except for shirts and ties. I do wear slim chinos, though. I also like the slim trousers with suits of the 1910s and earlier half of the 1920s.

Clip on suspenders, baggy top and thin tapered lower leg (except zoot pants) and my all time hate... Denim trousers (not jeans) with an elasticized waist... Ugh All I can think of ATM

I'm not a fan of brown suits - truly a personal pet peeve - all but a very few of them look horrible to me.

Short-sleeve dress shirts, especially with a tie

Those velvet slippers that are all the rage today with the "heritage" set

Houndstooth jackets or pants, but I like houndstooth ties and socks - I don't think the pattern works as the main part of an outfit, but is great as an accent piece

And my number one pet peeve - ill fitted clothes. If you are going to dress, buy clothes that fit or get them tailored to fit. Even expensive clothes look bad if they are ill-fitted
