My dad has been asking for a hat of his own for about a month. He used to have a collection when he was younger, but it's all gone now, with the exception of a stetson derby which he gave to me.
he wanted a light colored hat, with a brim at about 2-1/2 inches. He left the rest pretty open ended.

I hope he likes it.

If he doesn't, I do, and it was only 25 bucks.

here's what the auction had to say about it:

"The 2 5/8" brim still has it's shape. Very soft beaver in the longer length, so you feel like it should be brushed. The hat is a medium shade of grey with a dark charcoal grey 1 3/4" wide grograin band. The leather sweat band is gold stamped with his logo plus"3x beaver quality--John R. Stetson Company -- MODE EDGE". The size tag says 1/8"

can you tell anything about it from the picture and description?

It's GREAT, dinerman. I bet the seller meant to say it was made by the John B. (NOT John R.) Stetson Company, cuz that sure looks like genuine Stetson markings in that photo and "mode edge" was Stetson's name for its version of the Cavanagh edge. Speaking of which, those edges aren't exactly everyday finds nowadays, and to find one on a fuzzy-finished felt like that, well, I bet it'll be a long spell before you find another.

It looks like a great hat Dinerman. I was considering bidding but I purchased a Whippet in light gray from the same seller instead. Your dad is a lucky man.

I'm not only impressed by some of the hats you've posted photos of lately, dinerman, but also by your apparent instinct for thrift. Amidst the grumblings over the inflated prices some vintage hats are fetching these days enters the young dinerman, showing us that deals are still to be had.
I'm guessing that you're the beneficiary of the sellers' poor decriptions and/or listings, and your own willingness to look into things a little deeper. That, and a bit of luck.
Is that about right?

It's a lot of luck, combined with bad pictures, and me not wanting to spend money.

I was surprised that I was the only bidder.

I came very close to bidding on this one but since I had just spent a fortune (to me at least) on a Borsalino, I decided to let this one go. I am glad to see that a fellow lounger got it and I am sure that your dad will like it.

Regards,
Hollis

Well- he didn't like the fuzzyness of it (said it looked too pimpy on him), so I get to keep it. I gave him my Lee, which as it turned out is the hat he wanted all along.
The hat weighs almost nothing, and has beautifully soft and furry felt. It is in clean shape, with only one minor moth bite, and that doesn't show. The mode edge is always cool, but with the furry felt, it looks even cooler.
The only thing that is a problem with it is that there was some of that old plastic (I don't know what it was) in the box, which has since decayed into tiny yellow bits, and some of that has stuck in the felt. I'm going to try to brush it out.

Looks great on you. Nice crown size for you, too.

I have had hats with those yellow flakes. Best I can
figure is it's the top of the liner (where one sometimes
sees plastic) that has decayed and crumbled. It shakes
out... eventually.

Really is a great hat on you. Glad your dad got the hat
he was wanting, too. Where's the picture of him with
his hat?

I think this plastic may be more from one of those plastic covers they put over the crowns of hats in the stores to keep them clean?, because this doesn't have the plastic in the liner.

as for my dad- he's a photographer, which means he absolutely hates being in front of the lens.

First of all, GREAT hat. It looks awesome and fits you well. :eusa_clap

Second of all, I have a fedora that is almost exactly like that. Same liner, sweatband and mode edge. The only difference is that mine is a tan color and not fuzzy. Mine is also in worse shape because someone tried to "fix" it before selling it. I plan on getting it renovated here shortly but was curious about a couple of things.

Does the felt have a lot of stiffener in it or is it really soft? Is there any information regarding the age behind the sweat?

Regards,
Hollis
