Is this what we, as a society have come to?

Perhaps the nuptials should have taken place in a restaurant, then the congregation could feel free to make calls on their cell phones as well. And yes, that is a pet peeve of mine.

The Kardashians are famous because the daughter Kim had tons of plastic surgery and released a sex tape. The public cannot get enough of family's "fashionable" lifestyle.
Upon that was built retail fashion boutiques coinciding with their TV 'reality' show following their exploits. Kim's father, Robert Kardashian, was once of the defending attorneys in the OJ Simpson case many years ago. Later on, his wife divorced him and married Olympic hero Bruce Jenner (about 20 years ago - excuse me if my chronology is off. I only know what I have read or been told). The whole thing is complete trash. But it makes them millions.

Aha. Thank-you. I begin to see why they have never entered my conciousness.

I saw this in the news today. I also hear the family name mentioned, but I still don't quite get who they are? Why are these Kardashians famous?

Please note, I'm not being rhetorical here - I genuinely have no idea who they are. Were they on X Factor or something similar?

Don't feel bad. As an American I was never too clear as to why they're famous either. Though ya gotta love celebrity in the 21st century -- now you can be well-known just for being... well-known compared to the bad old days when celebrity status was only conferred upon people such as entertainers who actually had talent or in the very least individuals whose accomplishments were concrete. :p

Like Edward "Daddy" Browning's wife, Frances "Peaches" Browning? (Or, for that matter, like Eva Gabor?)

"On June 23, 1926 (her sixteenth birthday), mere weeks after meeting the 51 year-old Edward Browning, 'Peaches' and 'Daddy' were wed. Later that same year, Peaches tried to obtain a divorce during which the White Plains, New York trial gained repeated coverage by New York city tabloid newspapers such as the New York Daily News, rival New York Daily Mirror and the more louche New York Graphic, which published a notorious composograph of the couple.

The story was soon picked up by the national newspapers and the couple became well known in American pop culture of the time. Among the notable incidents were her allegations of her husband's odd behavior, including the fact that he kept a honking African goose in their bedroom. The judge agreed with his version, ruling that Peaches had abandoned her husband without cause, and cut him free. Peaches' notoriety gained her a career in vaudeville. She was managed by Marvin Welt, one of the first theatrical agents to demand a percentage of total ticket sales for some of his clients.

When Edward Browning died in 1934, Peaches was awarded $6,000 as a widow's portion.

Peaches went off into vaudeville and onto three more husbands, before she slipped in her bathroom and died in 1956, at age 46."

True ... but to Bernarr Macfadden's credit (and yes, he was a nut in many respects), his foundation opened a healthy vegetarian "Penny Cafeteria" in 1931 that asked patrons to pay only one cent per dish ... and five cents for a five-course meal! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Cafeteria

Indeed. Macfadden was a crass, vulgar, self-absorbed smut-peddler -- but he was a crass, vulgar, self-absorbed smut-peddler with a heart.

And, it would seem, a few other things besides.

I knew that name and face was somehow familiar. I have a 1932 edition of book written by Bernarr MacFadden called Hair Culture. How and where I acquired it I have no idea. lol

In America, the 'land of the beautiful,' you get plenty of attention when you look like this:

And I keep breathing hoping I live long enough where people like her don't get any attention...she was married what, 20 days? I have so many things I'd like to say, but don't dare...

The Kardashians are a cultural embarrassment, right up there with Jerry Springer.

Back in the day, you still had to have "photographic evidence" of some sort to whet the public's appetite for the scandal de jour. Evidence that the photographers of the time had to work hard to get, considering the cameras they had to work with. Now you can rat yourself out with your phone's camera and your Facebook account. No effort required.

Scandals aren't what they used to be. Now, as a general rule, they're just boring and tedious.
