Its a size 36. 17" across shoulders, 40" across chest, 30.5 length, 24 sleeves.

Thats my thought too. I really like it. even if it is 80s

Is there a label or tag? Look inside the inside breast pocket for a union tag?

Theres a label, but he took a blurry photo of it. He said there are no other tags, but he seemed a bit dim so I wouldn't be surprised if I found a union tag when it arrives. I wont see the jacket till May, as Im having it sent to Detroit for when I visit. I looked up the maker, and they started in 1945, changed hands in the 90s and definitely do not make their clothes in America any longer.

That label doesn't really look like what I'd expect to in something from the 80's, it appears much older than that. It looks like authentic hep-cat 50's fleck blazer to me.

Well thats a relief. It would have bugged me endlessly if it was 80s.
Why? Style and construction are what matters, not actual age. People here just prefer the styles of earlier eras.

Blasphemy, I know.

Also, I really dig that fabric. Nice find.

Yeah, I guess you can call me out as a purist if you like. I'm just not really into the idea of it. Its not really a snobbery thing, but I also don't like a whole lot of the reproduction stuff out there. Don't get me wrong, there is some amazing stuff out there, and I myself own a couple Sun Surf shirts, but an 80s jacket is 80s. The mindset that went into it would be 80s with a 50s feel.

I guess it would be like saying an 80s gab shirt is a 50s gab shirt. Its simply the difference between night and day, even if the fabric was close and they used an original pattern.

Anyway, I'm not here to debate the issue, its just my personal feelings. :)

If it's an original pattern and essentially the same fabric, it's 50's made in the 80's, but the trouble with repro is that they mark significantly up from what the item they're making an exact duplicate of sold for, even adjsuted for inflation.

To be perfectly fair and open bout it, I'm not a huge vintage clothing nut. I'm here for the hats first and foremost, and here to talk about other things secondarily. What I put out there is just the opinion of some random guy, take it or leave it. You're certainly not required to agree.

I have a jacket of a nearly identical pattern in a thick, densely woven wool with narrower lapels and a lower gorge. Unfortunately, I don't know the date of it either. The label indicates it's custom made, but no union tags or other labels.

...

The tag is definitely older. I'd guess late '50s/early '60s.

I can't remember when Alexandre made the switch to Savile Row but this jacket obviously dates to before that date. Not a really old label, but some age. I'd say late 50s, just because of the cut. Had it been sold in the UK, i'd have guessed early-middle 60s. Styles were a bit slower to change.

Interesting puzzle. My first thought is pretty obviously 50s unless it was a very good repro. Thing is, in the 80s most makers did not do repros, they did influenced by. Lighter weight, double breasted fleck etc. I do know there were some 80s companies doing repro, but they did gab jackets, shirts etc. rare would be areal sportcoat, but maybe in the UK that would be different.

Then I said, well, he could tell easily from the fabric, but then realized you could not feel it yet.

So, of course label. But your label is tricky. I would say vintage, but it almost could be 80s. Not quite though, I would say. But it is not an obvious 50s label that I could spot at 100 yards.

It almost looks like some 30s labels that often do not look 40s or 50s, and can trick you.

In the end, the cut and quality seem obviously 50s, plus, the buttons have the tone of vbintage, and an 80s would likely not quite capture that.

I think you are pretty safe.

And, for the record, I would care too. Unless it was a perfect or close to it repro, I would care. Why? because to my trained eye, it would never fit, feel, or hang right, plus just knowing it wasn't would slightly bug me. On the other hand, if i had a perfect repro I knew was made in the 80s I would think the cool factor of that would match the cool factor of vintage. but I would be shocked if I ever found a perfect repro made today, let alone the 80s when people did not care as much about perfect repro.

The most popular label that did 50s inspired clothes in the 80s was Reminiscence.

Yes, I have seen some of these around. I admire that they at least tried. But any one of us could likely spot one at 100 yards. Actually, the get me excited in the thrift stores for a second until I pull the hangers apart and actually get a look at it. Then I am disappointed. But that happens all the time wiht 70s pin striped suits, and other stuff.
