Excellent comments klind65!! I just got one, I call it "my four furry little friends". Here's a picture-

I've only worn it thus far to a recent Art Deco Society lecture, everyone there loved it! Of course that group is a built in appreciative audience.

I do wear my 40s vintage everywhere, and have never gotten a negative comment. I love wearing my vintage hats, gloves and using my 40s purses. I completely agree with you- presentation matters! If WE don't start a more sartorial and well dressed trend, who will??

Hello. To directly answer the question, yes, I would like to wear the neck furs from the 20's with the head and tail and feet attached. I know where to get them and probably will one day wear them....
But I'd also like to address the members who have non-fur items they are afraid to wear. In addition to my skirt suits, I wear white gloves and hats everyday - to work, to shop, to socialize - whatever. I have had only the kindest, most enthusiastic responses from people: male, female, old, young, different races - all types. Some are curious and want to know why I am dressed so well. This always saddens me because it momentarily takes me out of my "own world" and reminds me that I do indeed live in this unfortuante period in which one needs a "reason" to dress well, but not one to dress like a bum! However, I always smile and explain that one doesn't in fact need a reason, and that self-respect and respect for others dictate that one present oneself respectably in public. This always goes over well; I have never ever had a problem. Of course, I am in a large city, still, human nature being what it is, everyone responds positively to beauty. If you look good, people may be curious but I doubt you'll encounter any unkind responses. So, please - be true to your convictions and wear your best. As more people do this, we could actually return the world to its former sartorial glory - everyone in suits and dresses and hats , gloves etc.... Why not? See yourself as a "teacher" of sorts reminding those in a "sheeplike" somnolence - that PRESENTATION MATTERS. Kind wishes, klind65:) :)

I was looking at vintage-style fancy ladies' hats with veils and feathers and so on... I really want one. They're not even expensive. They look good on me (I think.) It's just a question of where I'd wear it and the looks I'd get.

Oddly enough, mens' hats are no problem at all for me. I have a fedora I dearly love that's gotten lots of compliments. Only the girly, fluffy, flowered/feathered ladies' hats daunt me. But oh, I want one.

I live in NYC and have no problems of that sort since very many ladies wear furs in the winter. But I think people may be more vociferous when the heads and feet are attached! Any advice? Do any of you ladies wear these ? If so, how do you deflect hecklers? I have one riposte at the ready in case the need arises: I smile and simply say, " Judge not, that ye be not judged" (Christ). Its not rude, it simply gets my point accross.

Hi klind65

Thanks so much for the photo. You look amazing!! Where did you get that hat? Like you, I always wear hats and gloves everywhere. I once had a hat with a full veil but had trouble keeping the veil up when I was eating or drinking! Kind wishes, klind65

I'm afraid this forum is wearing off on me, I got over my red lippy in public phobia! Despite my mothers disparaging look, I've worn it out a couple times now!!!:D

almost all my vintage hats are from evilBay. Go to: Clothing, vintage, accessories, women's hats, and then type 40s or 1940s

OOOH I love the veiled 40s hats! But I will usually only buy intact veil hats, rather than get them with damaged veiling. They are so fun to wear! I encourage you to check out my vintage albums on my Picture Trail, to see more of my vintage hats! I just lift the veiling up to set/place it up on the front brim out of the way... Here's one of my very favorites, with flocked netting and birds no less!

Because I was a teenage punk rocker, I'm still a little shy when it comes to wearing anything too out of the ordinary. I think it's all those looks I got back then that makes me paranoid that everyone is looking at me.

Although I'm getting a little bolder, I still feel that it's more socially acceptable for women to wear vintage clothing than men.

I don't think this is the case. In fact, much women's vintage sticks out like a sore thumb (but I like being the sore thumb, so big deal) while much men's vintage is more subtle when contrasted against the rest of the world. Distinct, but subtle. If you are wearing, say, a really good late 40's suit -- well, most people will notice that you're crisp and well put together, and might recognize that you're wearing quality, but they wouldn't neccessarily know it is vintage. Likewise, a basic gabardine shirt, while it is certainly something not equaled in men's clothing today, is not something that will immediately draw UNDUE attention (unless you should choose pink or lavender, which is extra cool), however, people may notice, without really realizing it, that your clothes drape more nicely. Same goes for a good pair of Hollywood waist pants. There are other gents on here with the same background you have, and you may get some good feedback on the vintage attire from those sources.

I have just tried to add a photo of a typical outfit complete with gloves and hat. But I don't think it worked.

I finally was successful in adding a photo. This is a typical outfit which I wear on a daily basis to work, shopping, social engagements. Hope you like it. Kind wishes, klind65

Hmm. I don't think there's anything I want to wear that I don't wear. After doing re-enacting and historical recreations and going out in public dressed in 1870's fashion, and doing Red Sonja skits with a friend (yours truly being featured as a priestess) and walking around most of the town... I really can't say after all that that I have any clothes that I'd be afraid to be seen in. I think once you wear something out that honestly makes everyone look at you, it's not so bad to turn a few heads in something you're "not sure about".
I'd still like to find a suitable place to wear burlesque/pinup clothing. That tends to be mostly not in public, however. ...Except for car shows and rockabilly festivals, anyways.

I am aware that you are a New York transplant. Therefore my intention is to assist you in acclimating to the area. As you know it takes all kinds to make this metropolis what it is. There are some who would champion your cause and others who would not. For example your kind words would go unheeded by the person in the picture.

I do not condone this behavior, but, New York is a land of many people and many causes.[huh] I hope this helps answer your situation.

I recently sold my mod faux cheetah coat on ebay and I'm glad I did. The person who won was thrilled and I know she'll wear and enjoy it, unlike me. :)
