Is there any way to look suave and debonair while chasing a hat down the street?

I keep a supply of those little smoke grenades they sell at ninjasupply.com for just such occasions.

(I checked right after I typed it. There's no ninjasupply.com - yet.)

This is a rather windy town. My homburg stays on my head better than my Lee in the wind, so if it's one of 'those days' I wear that instead. Occassionally I've gone out hatless in high winds, or had to carry my hat. It irritates me something fierce, but the hat doesn't have a wind trolley and I'm not sure that stretching the hat will make it sit more securely.

My wife has expressed concern in the past that I would jump out in front of a double decker to save my hat.

Windy City blues

Here in the Windy City I just walk down the street doing the Hat Wearer's Salute. That is, one hand clamped firmly on the crown of the hat.

I've also become adept at unconsciously tilting my head into the wind, so the hat is blown onto my head, instead of off.

An ounce of prevention... I don't buy hats without wind trolleys anymore, and I've started having them added to hats I already owned before adopting the rule.

How / where do you attach the cord to the hat ? Do you poke a hole in the sweatband and thread it through or do you sew it to something ?

It attaches with a stitch or two to the felt underneath the center of the bow. When not in use, it is looped around the crown. When in use, the button (or in some cases, the loop, depending on the setup) goes into a button hole/around a button in the shirt/jacket you are wearing

Actually, I have seen a similar item in Western shops - although it's way cheaper to make your own. Two small binder clips and a length of heavy black twine or small diameter cord. I'd suggest no longer than 3-4' so if said had DOES blow off, it won't hit the ground...which with wind, is apt to be wet most of the time. Tie said cord between the two binder clips. Clip one to the rear brim of the hat, the other to your jacket collar, shirt collar, lapel, etc. Problem solved!

The local Western shop wanted $12.95 each for their version. Our friends at Staples have 60 black clips for $6.79 and 18 pastel fashion colors for $2.99[/URL] and I daresay, 3' of heavy black thread or twine sufficient to not separate in hurricane-force winds probably costs about a dime.

One secret when gusts of wind keep puffing a hat, paper or whatever down the street - get past the hat and block it. When it blows into your ankles, reach down and grab it. Otherwise, as you say, in trying to catch up to it, Mother Nature keeps moving the goal line another foot or two as you almost have the hat in your grasp.

Stampede strings is the official term.

I'd wear a mask out in public at all times while wearing my hat to avoid such embarrassment. [huh]

Thankfully, that's only happened to me once, and it was a fairly brief chase. The hat probably only got about ten or fifteen feet away from me. I crammed it back on my head and the redness on my face disappeared within a few minutes.

Last hat i lost was whilst fishing ,a huge gust of wind appeared out of no where , hat gone fishing , gear about to go , it was a mad undignified scramble to save the gear .
all i could do was watch as the hat sailed off into the distance . even though there was no one to witness my plight i still felt foolish .

Although not foolproof, if it appears that it's gonna be a windier than usual type of day, I will not wear a hat with a snap brim. One in particular, a Dobbs I have, fits snugly, and the brim will give before the hat leaves my head.

Like any other sport, the best you can do in hat chasing is avoid getting frustrated. Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.
