Is it or is it not, that's the question?

That's a fairly generic looking tweed jacket, probably Harris Tweed. By "generic," I don't mean that pejoratively; I mean it is common. I have one, love it, and wear it all of the time, only mine has flap pockets. I think Lands End was making them like this with patch pockets last year.
I would say, by all means, buy it, if the price is good. They are wonderful and indestructible jackets. They match all sorts of things.

I have two Harris Tweed jackets and I love them both and wear them both often. I also have three other tweed jackets. I went crazy with tweed for a while there.

Buy it, young man; it's a very nice jacket.

A VERY nice jacket! And it looks much like the one a film-archaeologist wore in India!;) I also think, as suit-jackets compared with jeans is becoming a part of main stream fashion, this one is my way to go!

Meh- don't condone that look. It looks like "History teacher trying to be hip but failing miserably". Or maybe that is just because that is how it is where I am.
I think the button stance looks too low. Still- good to have some tweeds in the last few months before spring starts.

The look is English Country Gentleman. I pair it often with a tattersail shirt, club or tartan tie and wool dress slacks. Sometimes, I wear it walking the dog with all of the above and my LL Bean boots with my pants tucked into them.

In Boston, it is a common look. Tweeds are popular here, due to the weather.

Always a smart look. By the way, are those Beaner's a 5 eyelet Ducks?

Marty
Mine are the 10" model and when mine were made 12 years ago they didn't have eyelets, they had these metal keeps that the lace threaded through, so you could pull it all very tight. But who laces those boots anyway?

I prefer the ones they make currently, with eyelets, 9 or 10 for the tall models.

That is a cool look- sometimes I wish I were still in New York so I could dress like that.

its funny, but as someone who lives in england, there's no way i want to look like an english country gentleman.

I didn't like the jeans and tweed jacket look. It just looks sloppy.
The tweed jackets and wool slacks are OK in my book, though.
I agree. I only have one pair of jeans and I only wear them when I go fishing or when I am cleaning around the house.
;)
If you're going to wear tweed, at least throw on some khakis.

Tweed coats...

Yes, I feel every man should have one tweed coat in his closet. I have a really sweet 50's "Desi Arnaz" styled single breasted tweed. It looks like it's right off the set of "I Love Lucy"!

Ray, THANK YOU! The jeans and tweed (or any blazer) coat is a very sloppy look that is rather popular here in CA. It's such a confusing look I think. Up top you have a nice coat but, under it you see an un-tucked button shirt or mostly a T-shirt with tight fitting jeans. You're description of an old professor trying to be hip and young but, not achieving his goal is right on the money! Even more so if the coat has those leather elbow patches!;) Now, why did the theme song from "Threes Company" just come on?:p

My favorite tweed coat I have is a houndstooth plaid tweed coat from the early 40's. It's double breasted and was originally a suit but looks really good with a pair of dark brown pants. I'll take a photo of it soon.

Tweeds are nice and I even more so love tweed suits! I find no "Itch factor" at all when I wear them.

Good thread guys!

I agree, Wild Root; tweed suits are fantastic. I had one made a few years ago but unfortunately, the fabric in the trousers wore out. I still have the jacket. A man I work with (transplanted Irishman) saw me wearing it and went into rhaptures becuase it reminded him of the tweed suits he used to wear back in Ireland.

I remember once asking for tweed trousers in a men's wear shop (fairly tony one, too) to be told that tweed was never used for men's trousers as it didn't last; it would rub itself between the legs. I just thanked the twit and left the store but I was thinking "so the pair I've been wearing for the last 12 years doesn't exist??"

Two answer a few questions....

Yes, I'll take some photos today some time of the DB coat and post them here. As to what you'd wear with a cap such as that Mr. H, you'd be best off with a solid brown or tan. Don't have to have a suit match the pattern because that would be an over kill I think.

Hahahahah, tweed trousers! They don't exist! That's a hot one! I have a few pairs from the 40's and early 50's and they are TOUGH! Most tweeds I find today are rather cheap (yeah, big surprise there:rolleyes: ) but, if you have money, you can buy some really good quality stuff that will last years! The cheap stuff does wear out between the legs and seat but, that was after a few years of daily wear.

Me not posting much? Well, I've been posting in a few other rooms as of late. I'm quite active here but, I'm trying to keep tabs on all the rooms I bartend in so, it gets kind of crazy.
