I'm ever so slightly offended by this. First of all, it's pine tar on the helmet. Nixon started that. Second, so what if he has long hair? It's neatly braided. And finally, the clothes aren't absurdly baggy, if they were he couldn't run.

And anyway, Damon was clean shaven for part of his Red Sox tenure. Eliminating the outward expression of one's personality is hardly something to strive for, IMHO.

I think Manny Ramirez needs a make-over. A George Steinbrenner make-over!
If Manny Ramirez was traded to the Yankees then he'd have to abide by Steinbrenner's strict standards.

You have to admit that since Damon left the Boston for the Bronx,

He's has been transformed from Slob to a NY City Slicker.

...for someone to bring that up. Former Mariner Randy Johnson had a hairstyle that looked more fitting on a Civil War era General. He had contract issues with Mariner management and pitched poorly, blaming his performance on his back, etc. As soon as he was traded to Arizona, he started pitching like his old self. I've had a long-standing beef with that; unprofessional on so many levels.

When he was finally traded to the Yankees, he was apparently told to clean up his act. I'm no Yankee fan, but I do appreciate ownership that enforces a standard.

And no matter how hung over Ruth, Marris and Mantle were they looked sharp when they took the field even if they may not have played their absolute best that day.

It quit being a sport and became a business when the power and pressure of agents took over. Whereas they used to pay a player on his past performance or future potential it became a contest of who had the best agent to procure the larger contract.

If one guy got $5 million a year we'd have expected him to be about twice as good as a guy getting $2.5 million. All it means now is one guy has a better agent.[huh]

And as I said this goes hand in hand with the new breed of greedy owners and city officials who are equally out of control.

I never watched millionaires play polo nor did I hang out with them. So as for today's pro-sports millionaires I have no interest in perpetuating their or the owners' lifestyle by purchase a ticket or even viewing a game on TV.

If it makes you feel any better, most athletes, I believe, don't hang on to their millions. They spend it all, get too old to play, and then have to get a real job.

And just having money won't get them on the social register.
