Is cable TV worth keeping?

The only cable I need is internet. I use sites like Hulu to watch TV. My laptop and cellphone take care of all my entertainment needs from TV to movies, music, to video games to internet. I don't like clutter.

When I lived in another town several years ago when I first moved to Maine, I discovered at my apartment I was getting free cable, how and why I didn't know or care. When I moved to where I am now, we only had cable for a year before realizing, it's not worth it. Only some shows on a few channels were worth watching.

In March 2008 I had to serve 23 days in the local pokey for a non-violent white collar idiotic decision I made. The only thing to do in there was watch TV. After getting out I was even more convinced that cable TV is still garbage, except for TCM, Discovery and History Channel.

Once again Time Warner is raising their fees. I love TCM and some of the other cable channels, but I am wondering if it's worth what I'm paying.

What about you? Have you given up cable TV or are you considering it? How did you fill in the gaps- watch shows online? Netflix etc?

By the way, I still have tube TVs.

The few movies I've seen in the last few years I saw at Sam's Club. Because I would watch it little at a time whenever I happened to be there it would sometimes take me a month to see the whole movie.

I personally have not watched TV in a long time. With Netflix and the ability to hook up a computer to a flat screen TV, I don't see the need in paying for cable anymore.

Sorry but I need my cable.....That said, I used to order the whole package with all the premium channels but in recent years I've trimmed most of them off as their offerings are now readily available on the interweb.

I think you're right. I usually wake up in the middle of the night and watching Lifetime or other fluff usually helps, like last night. I'm not in a position where I *need* to let it go because of money, although I still think it's a rip off. I could fill the gaps during the day but at night when I can't sleep, channel surfing versus counting sheep works better!

I did away with cable for about 7 years not too long ago, but now I have three children 2-7-10 so I have cable again. Looked into getting a dish but too many trees in the way.

If it weren't for Fox Soccer Channel--the *only Fox network I watch*--and Gol TV, I wouldn't have cable at all. Even Turner Classic Movies has become disappointing in recent years. I wish we could have cable à la carte as has been mentioned many times on this forum, but I guess advertisers wouldn't want that.

I don't really enjoy viewing movies or TV shows on a computer screen, and have no interest in downloading video or audio, or owning an i-Anything. I'm old school - I want my movies and albums to be a physical object, and I tend to watch most things when they are broadcast, not when I feel like it.

Yeah, I'm definitely on the traditionalist side of this particular issue.

Same here. Looks like we'll both be saving money once DVDs/CDs are considered obsolete--though I'm involved in the niche market of limited edition film scores that the CD format should remain vital for at least a few more years. However, if it all becomes downloads and the like, I'll save the money for things like trips abroad...besides, I have enough books, cds, and dvds to last a lifetime.
