As I am very much looking forward to the upcoming comedy film about Nazi's on the moon in 1945 I was searching up links and found "some" truth behind the story. (don't laugh yet) Apparently Hitler was (supposedly) at least working on some kind of flying disc before and during the war Link here and that story leads into the Germans acquiring land at the South Pole (confirmed) in 39 I believe named it New Swabia. Why? No clue, I'll HAVE TO READ A LITTLE FURTHER, BUT IT IS FASCINATING...

If there never was or is anything in Antarctica,...then why did we send a complete naval task force with about 5,000 troops just after the war's end? I think they fully expected to encounter a sizable force of German troops.
They did discover this!

A discovery of this magnitude would surely warrant further exploration.

Wow, I started reading about all this and wow! I never heard about anything to this effect before. I wonder how much truth there is to it?

I always find it funny, all this "secret Nazi experiments" stuff. Sure, it was great on paper, and maybe there were even prototypes, but honestly, look at the state of Germany by 1943. Truth is they were running around with heavy bolt-action rifles wearing WWI-style leather gear and had no food.

It's fun to think about their inventions but let's face it, Germany lost the war long before 1945 came along.

Well I'm new to all of this but from what I've read there is one undeniable fact that they did claim all that land in Antarctica...why? Hitler was known for his extreme interest in the supernatural, religious artifacts, magic, why wouldn't he be into UFO's, makes sense to me... and if it's all BS we've still got Iron Sky to look forward to!!!!!!

I am so incredibly excited for this movie! It looks absolutely phenomenal, regardless of any truth behind it.

The Nazi headquarters on the Moon remind me a little of these buildings. No lie, I found it on Google Earth! :eeek:

Well, truth is they actually found an extensive system of fresh water lakes, and actually landed a PBY on one of them to check it out at least briefly. Here's a little bit of info about the German explorations. They also found somewhat temperate areas and lakes of unfrozen water. Most likely caused by geothermal activity. http://bigthink.com/ideas/21137

Same reason our government marched thousands of troops and exposed thousands of sailors to atomic blasts, to see what happened to them! Draftees aren't worth much, so some frost bite is no big deal. The Nazis were not neer as advanced as they liked to portray them selves as. The mighty V2 rocket was not as far removed from a Foker triplane as you would think, both were made with Chromemolly tubing as their foundation. The Americans were already using the fuel as part of the structure, doing away with the tubing, the German scientists who came over hear said that was imposable. The Superman myth lives on, they weren't, thats why they lost!

Oh, I don't think they would have sent 5000 (?) troops all the way to Antarctica just see "what happens to them". There would have had to be some reason. That costs money, they must have had some other reason...

They had the ships, equipment, and manpower, and they were not about to under estimate the regime that nearly conquered the entire world. Sure, the so-called master race was a myth, but the nazis were a formidable enemy to say the least. No one knew what, if anything, they would find in Antarctica. An entire continent about as large as the U.S. and Europe put together. To this day we know very little about it I think.
Here's the official Hollywood version of the expedition.

So Few

The question isn't why did they send so many men, but why did they send less then 5000 Sailers and Seabees to take on Nazi UFOs? Lets face it, the real reason for operation High Jump was to grab land, we were the only ones who had the resources to do it! It wasn't even a big secret, men were allowed to send post cards home, which you can buy now. Then Hollywood made a bad movie about it, and used a conspiracy buffs dream title. The sad thing is, there were many scientific discoveries and first on that mission, and the next year follow up, this stupid Nazi junk just overshadows the real accomplishments and the few men who lost their lives for science.

If the American military didn't expect to encounter enemy forces, then why did they send 4 warships , 2 destroyers, a submarine, and an aircraft carrier loaded with combat aircraft? I think that they, ( quite prudently) were not about to underestimate the maniacal enemy with which they had just been in a life or death struggle. Which struggle, we could have lost or at least ended in a different cold war, if not for Hitler's insanity.
All that was really needed for exploration in Antarctica, were the flying boats, seaplane tenders, ice breakers, and supply ships. They obviously took that stupid nazi junk seriously.
Given the facts of the time, I don't blame them.
