Unsubstantiated, but this soldier is claiming an Ipod deflected a bullet.

IPod shot

Seems unlikely, but its a nice rumour.

Something just isn't right about this. It says in the link that he was shot by an insurgent with an AK-47 from a distance of "a few feet." I have shot AKs at 1/4 inch steel plate at a longer distance and it punches right through. An Ipod is basically plastic, a circuit board and a thin LCD screen. And from the photo, it doesn't even look like it was penetrated by the bullet. If an AK round hit an Ipod straight on, it would go right through as if it wasn't there.

I could imagine an Ipod taking some energy from an depleted round, say one fired 2 miles away just randomly falling down and hitting a soldier. But one slowing down an 7.62x39 round at point blank range? I don't think so. I would say the body armor saved that soldier's life, not the Ipod.

AK47's also use the smaller round that is closer to the 223. Remember the Ipod did not stop it, just slowed it down. Bullets do freak things, I had heard of bullets deflected by wire frame glasses. Deflection, deformation of the bullet and a variety of things make a difference.

Steel core 7.62X49 rounds do have a lot of punch power, the steel core looks like a slim roller bearing to me, and I also have used it on some metal plates and such.

Good luck or Grace of God, you can decide.

I have two of the 5.45x39 AK-74 clones and they have higher velocity with somewhat less penetrating power. But even that round would not be slowed much at all by the Ipod. It might be deflected a bit, yes, but since the body armor was immediately behind the Ipod deflection doesn't matter in this case. The soldier must have been wearing the hard body armor that can stop rifle rounds, regardless of whether an Ipod was in front.

7.62x39... two more millimeters and you'd have a 7.62 NATO!!!lol ;)
About that 5.45X39 Vladimir... Do you like it? I have never fired one, but I hear their pretty fun.

I know win mag is still 30 caliber. Not sure how long it is.[huh]

.308 is very similar to 7.62x51 but there are some differences in case dimensions.

If he was wearing the newer ESAPI plates it would have disipated most of the energy from the bullet. They were designed and issued specifically in response to the steel core 7.62x54 round insurgent snipers are using. The plates weigh a ton but have proven effective. As I understand the ipod was hit but the body armor stopped the round.

I recall from my USMC training in 1966 that we were told that the AK 47 round was designed slightly larger, so that they could use our ammunition, but we couldn't use theirs.
