Makes me think of all the pages missing from editions of Apparel Arts when i get them.

Case in point: the covers of 1930s Fortune magazine issues. It was Fortune's luxurious format, of course, that Apparel Arts deliberately (and faithfully) copied.

Libraries around Los Angeles are having the covers cut out of their old Fortune magazines. Thieves are slicing them off to sell online. The covers are so beautiful that they're popular for framing.

Having a master's degree doesn't mean you're smart...it means you can work the system and play the game, memorize the facts and spit them back out when needed.

...and those skills are even more helpful when running a tight scam. This guy's wasn't tight enough, obviously.

Exactly. One professor I had in college once said to the class that all the degree tells a prospective employer is that you know how to follow directions. :p
These guys know how to cut along a straight line and stuff documents in their socks and shorts. Sounds like some other wag I know but we won't go there. ;) :p

We had a bloke in Sydney that had been systematically cleaning out one of our natural history museums for years until discovered with the loot back 'ome.
I remember this case - he had some amazing items. Stuffed wildlife specimens, etc!

It is incredibly frustrating when people pilfer from our archives. I remember having to have every document checked before leaving the National Archives (Public Record Office) in Kew...I once had a repro of an image from the teens tucked in my notebook, and when security came across it they were a bit non-plussed. Fortunately it was very evident that it wasn't an original document when they examined it.

Intellectual property theft is bad enough in academic circles - it's even worse when it spills over into physical property theft!
