Even though its her dress, its a very arrogant thing for both the granddaughter and the designer to do. To think they can improve on it by any stretch of the imagination. That girl is not her granny. Sorry.

eh, it definitely looked better and more vintage glam pre-modification to me. I don't really see how the dress before modification hit at an "awkward length" as the article said... looks like it goes down plenty in the picture.

But, I don't feel horrified that Bergman's granddaughter modified her vintage gown. It's not like it was an iconic dress... just a glamourous old gown that didn't quite match Elettra's contemporary aesthetic. At least she made (re)use of it rather than dumping it.

the dress' own history doomed it, no doubt. it's funny how people attach significance to things that were worn/used by others. "hey look, I'm wearing my famous grandma's dress!" doesn't quite have the same ring as "hey look, I'm wearing a dress like my famous grandma's!"

It always breaks my heart when I see perfectly lovely vintage frocks "upcycled" to look more modern; seriously, folks, if it's modern aesthetics you're after, leave the vintage alone and buy a modern dress! A dress that's cut to be long just won't look right short, and why mess with success anyway? :eusa_doh:

I can't believe someone dared put a scissor to it and take away more than half of the dress! At least if they'd let it hit beneath the knee it would still have some harmony left. Alas!

I don't find this any more disturbing than anybody altering their mother's or grandmother's wedding gown in order to fit their taste.
She may regret it one day, but even thenit's not like somebody else would have had a chance to wear or own it, and it would have been in storage somewhere.

That is just plain horrible - imagine cutting up that beautiful gown - doesn't bear thinking about - cutting away history and a truly stunning dress. I really don't like dresses above the knee (never really have) and I don't care how young/old you are I don't think knees are the nicest parts of the body to show off regardless of what shape you are in or what age you are - I'm a strictly below the knee kind of gal - to me it's infinitely more elegant.

Absolutely agreed. The problem with that look, aside from the lumpiness, is that it makes the poor girl look terribly top-heavy. Maybe modern fashion requires that you look like you'd tip over in a strong wind, but I don't think it's very flattering on anyone, least of all if it takes a cut up vintage gown to achieve it.

A propos knees: I used to be a "below the knee girl", but now that I've fallen head over heel for the sixties, up the hem goes! However, I agree with RodeoRose, this particular dress isn't cut to be that short, it looks out of proportion now. I'm surprised a designer wouldn't be sensitive to this.

No one (or Vogue) would look twice at that re-made dress if it weren't for the fact it was owned by her famous grandmother. Is it stylish? Creative? Even slightly special? Really, she could have just trotted down to her local Forever 21 and picked a dress with the same cookie-cutter aesthetics. And what will she brag about it? That it belonged to Ingrid Bergman.

I don't see anything wrong with above the knee. I don't care for it on me as I see it as something more youthful, and very casual.
An above the knee evening gown is an oxy moron.
