I'll second that. That's a hat with some real character, and lots of miles behind it. The shadow it casts is great too.

I keep doing that with mine - seeing how the shadow looks. lol

This has turned out to be a great thread!

Thanks for all the fantastic photos everyone!...

Thank YOU for starting it.

It looks like there are a lot of FLers who like the idea of having an Indy hat in their collection, but don't want to get bogged down in screen accuracy and lots of fiddly details. It can get a little heavy-going in that respect over at C.O.W. sometimes, so this thread is a great alternative.

One of the primary reasons I never joined COW was because I felt that many people over there tend to get carried away. I'm all for screen accuaracy on my hat...I tried my best to get a "idol grab" bash ;) but there's a certain aura on COW that I am uncomfortable with.

Looks more "Streets of Cairo" to me, Jerekson. ;)

Seriously, though, I know what you mean. Initially, when I knew that place was specifically focussed on the style of hats I was interested in, I liked it. But to be honest I'm now feeling more at home amongst Loungers. The atmosphere here is more about what looks good on a person, and not to do with the specifics of duplicating a particular bash.

I also think the average age over there might be a little lower, which might explain why more threads there tend to end up goofing about than they do here; you can ask a question or suggest an idea, and before you know it your thread can be sunk under in-jokes or unrelated stuff.

Don't get me wrong - C.O.W. folks are nice, friendly people, but they just have their priorities in a different place to me, that's all.

Yes, everyone over there is very nice, etc. Great people with great hobbies. But I just never felt that I would fit in with the crowd. I'm an Indy fan...but I don't think I'm a big enough Indy fan to make it over there. If you know what I mean. :p I still check the forums occasionally to see what's happening.

Granted I could be considered a nutter on just about any subject I take a keen interest in to almost being obsessed with learning what I can about it in a very short amount of time. But then it fades to an even flow and balances out with all the other things I learn. So it goes with COW & The Fedora Lounge. I don't have the obsessive drive to know as much but the interest is still there. The Golden Era is far more fascinating to me, especially when it covers the 30's & 40's & during WWII. A point of history which still captivates me.

Well, you'll find that plenty of us do cross over to the Lounge as well. There you'll find plenty of "Indy" specifics on the hat. That is all well and fine when you're trying to refine your Camptown, Adventurebilt or Akubra to a specific scene or style from the three films.

Here you will find a broader range dealing with a larger universe of hats from your basic cabbie to your dressier Homburgs. That's not to say that the "Indy" looks doesn't have it's place here too. It was influenced by the Golden Era and in turn influences modern hat style. But, I think that over here at the Lounge the tastes of what one wears matures or evolves into another realm of how to dress and wear ones lid. It sees it's influences in, yes Indy, but more so in Humphrey Bogart, James Stewart, Bing Crosby & Gary Cooper (at least for the gentlemen). Also it sees it's influence from the common man of the era, including our relatives of the same. To me folks like Douglas show a great deal of style influence here and remain rather humble about it. They are to be applauded for what they share here.

Like so many of you I got my start over at COW, then I found the Fedora Lounge and found many of the same people from there over here, but not so die hard on that particular look. I had found a greater wealth of knowledge in a different direction that I rather enjoyed. So I post over here more often than I do at COW. But I still go there from time to time to share what I have learned and to learn a few new things as well. I refined my tastes in vintage hats here, and progressed on learning how to clean a vintage hat & reshape it to what I want. For those who poo poo what questions you have, pay them no mind. They tread in unfamiliar territory and haven't found their so called enlightenment, so they knock one down so as to feel better instead of doing a little research to find the answer to whatever question is posed out there.

Personally I think that these two sites go hand in hand and those that walk in both sites are richer from the experience. What I had found is that knowledge is a two way door and both sites shine with that. Of course some threads will get hijacked in both sites, and maybe more so over at COW but eventually the questions get answered somewhere. For me it has been a great learning experience with a great group of people at both forums, and for that I say thanks. I only hope that I can contribute as much as I receive.

But hey, that's just my two cents.

Cheers!

Dan

I also have never joined COW, despite browsing that forum on a nearly daily basis for over five years. I simply have nothing to contribute at the level of obsessive detail that prevails there. I've learned a lot, and I first found my here from there - but there's really no point in my joining.

To paraphrase Spencer Tracy in Inherit the Wind: "Raiders is a movie. It's a good movie. But it's not the only movie."

I love Raiders of the Lost Ark(*), actively dislike Temple of Doom, and greatly enjoy yet am still quite disappointed in Last Crusade. I know that the Indy films acted like a gateway drug to interest in the 1930s for many folks (especially those younger than me), but I had been a history buff and movie fan for many years before I even saw it.

(* I will mention that seeing Raiders on opening day in 1981 at the then-new Astor Plaza in Manhattan was one of the peak moviegoing experiences of my movie-obsessed life. But this was largely for a reason that is simply impossible now: the film was a series of incredible *surprises*. There was *no* advance information, much less spoilers. Even via the SF fanzines and film trade papers [both of which I read avidly then], all we knew was that it was an homage to the old serials set in the 1930s, and that the Han Solo guy from Star Wars played somebody in a hat called Indiana Jones. As the incredible thrill machine that is Raiders unspooled before us, we were surprised and delighted by everything in the film. In today's world, even if you actively try and avoid spoilers, you can never walk into a big-budg, high-profile film and be so surprised!)

I have lately became hooked on the look from the Young Indy series.

There is just something about this hat that I like. So much so I tried to bash my new Federation in that style.

I think that bit sums it up nicely. I just feel a little more at home here than there, is all. But I wouldn't want to feel I couldn't post there at all.

There is a slightly stronger sense of the clique at COW, but I have found that to be inevitable in forums with such a focussed area of interest; there is a very specific back history there between different members, and sometimes knowing this can be integral to the understanding of a conversation. FL is slightly more relaxed in this respect, which I suspect is because the area of interest here is much broader.

BTW, I sincerely hope these comments don't come across as disparaging - as I said, I enjoy both forums, and find them both very useful and interesting. I am simply posting my observations about the first impressions I have got from COW and FL, as a new visitor to both.

You know, that's exactly what my hat looked like after a bit of rough-housing and befroe reshaping it.

I know it can't be the same hat through all the Indy films (if memory serves, he still has his hat by the end of Temple, but it gets lost in Raiders, so it's not the same hat in Last Crusade...), but I wonder is that meant to be an earlier vision of the hat he wears in Raiders? Seems conceivable to me that over time, with many years of the pinch being grabbed to take it off / put it on / doff it to the ladies, the pinch would slowly become sharper and more pronounced....

I didn't do anything to make it look 'Indy' other than order it from Steve. It's been through a lot of real adventure and many seasons, hot desert to snowy city and even took a dive with me into a river from a train tressle bridge.

The 'distressing' is all natural, even the dust. It sure needs a cleaning and reblocking, but it's served me very well the last few years.
