Indiana Jones V

Exactly so. Lucas' core problem is that he doesn't understand how humans work, no matter how good he is at designing video games. Spielberg has made some great films over the years, I'll give him that, but the vast majority of his output is far too heavy on the schmaltz for me. I love the Indy films, but I think it has come time for someone to do something better. I still have al ot of affection for Temple, however unfashionable that might be. A lot of the subtleties of Indy's relationship with Shortround - the way he treats him as an adult not a kid, and yet in some ways behaves himself like a big kid around the kid.... that's a theme that's interesting, but gets a bit lost in the "Hey, kids, here's a kid for you to want to be!" Disneyesque side of it. I'd like to have seen that better explored by a more talented director. (It also has a place in the later films' exploration of Indy first as son and then father in Crusade and Skull respectively.)

I was thinking that there probably could be a film with an adult Short Round returning as the source of a new story - would help with marketing in Asia if nothing else.

I think we've discussed that before; I agree, it would be interesting. The Chinese have such a rich culture to draw on for the macguffin. Obvs the CCP couldn't be the bad guys or it would be a non-starter in terms of filming there, or even being released in cinemas. I'm sure something could be found that worked well for the time period, though. Like an early 1960s-set, reverse Red Heat with a supernatural element.

Here is a beautiful MacGuffin for some future IJ movie. The bit about how it got into Nazi hands is a bit vague, giving much room for creative dramatization. And putting Indy in the North African Desert in 1942 for the battle of El Alamein will be no problem at all. Now we just have to come up with a reason why Dr Jones would be pursuing such an unusual item. It must contain a secret. (Indeed, in real life, why did the Nazis bother to bury it so carefully in the desert?)

How about the nazis burried it because it conceals, in a secret compartment, hidden among the intricate carving, a recipe, in Yiddish, of the best chicken soup ever concocted east of the Rhine. No ? Or how about; it was buried by a very cultured & sensitive Nazi general, fearing it might fall into the hands of herr Hitler, since he knew if you play a particular air on this materpiece, you can summon the devil. Indy discovers this on reading the script & dashes to find this satanic device & relocate it to secret location (No, not Zone 51, it has to be secret, remember !) before Adolf, who has also read the script, sends his comical yet ruthless henchmen to recuperate it.
Works for me, all we need now is someone who can play the piano & a studio that creates lousy CGI.

Haven't they already confirmed it will be early 1960s set, given Ford is still in the leaD? Maybe they'll set it in Dallas and Indy will solve the Kennedy murder case!

Well I'm just going to say it! At this point anything they put out has to be better than that last disaster! That was something that still to this day makes me ask the question, how could that franchise have ever turned out something so awful! I guess a better question would be, why did they allow it to happen. The horrible writing, lack of onset chemistry and the horrible dialog between the poorly selected cast members would have been the end of any other franchise. After the first thirty minutes of that mess and the ship had already gone down, I think it's safe to say the only reason we continued to watch or even care was because Indy was onboard and we would follow him anywhere.

I just hope they give Harrison a bit more help this time because as incredible as he has been in ALL the films, he can't do it all by himself.

Just a thought.

Listen, it was 19 years between the last two. At this rate they still have seven years to go, so sit back and relax. Besides, they still have to change the posters to read "Indiana Jones and the Pandemic Delay".

Indiana Jones 5 may be cancelled!?!? But wait, we've got a whole Fedora Lounge thread devoted to this project! They can't do this to us. If someone in Hollywood would just read this thread from end to end, they'd find workable solutions to all their problems. Am I right, or am I right? Outrageous! (Relax, Tiki, old boy. For one thing, this is just a rumour. More importantly, even if they do cancel the film, it is just a matter of time until Indy gets rebooted in some shape or form. The premise of a rogue 1930s archaeologist is just too good. Not to mention the hat.)

The only reason Disney bought the Indy franchise was so that no one else could use it. They never seriously planned on making an Indy V & have just been stringing along the Indy nerds with promesses & false starts to keep them intersted enough so they continue to buy Indy merchandizing.
Besides, with this coronacircus, both Ford & many of the fans around in the 80s, will be long under ground before a new film can be made & those still standing won't even know who the hell he is anyway.:D

Yep, I can't imagine too many people under 50 being the slightest bit interested in 1930's style adventures, Nazi's or no Nazis. In movie form Indy has so few places to go that aren't laborious cliches. Maybe a TV series that can open up the ideas and characters somewhat, with the benefit of additional time and a more nuanced narrative.
