If you had to pick one DRINK from the Golden Era...

OH to choose to choose. :p It would have to be either a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned. Duh! :p ;)
My friend has been experimenting with some new drinks though and he really has something with the Chocolate Banana Martini as well as the Melon Martini.

Alcohol: Vueve Cliquot Champagne (not sure of spelling) and I'm also a Dirty Martini type,but only with gin.

Non: I have to second Lauren's choice of Coca-cola in the bottle.

Alcoholic-two choices. Micro brew ales and 10 or 20 yr. old Tawny Port. So many styles of the first but Guiness is a favourite. As for the Port, look for names like Taylor-Fladgate and Fonseca for classic big time bottlers. Another that comes to mind is a tawny from of all places, Australia. This is called Benjamin Tawny Port. I usually don't try anything calling itself Port that doesn't come from Portugal. This is an exception. $10-12 per bottle and butter smooth like good tawny's. Lest I sound like a wine snob please be assured, I'm not. I have neither the experience or budget to even come close to telling anyone what is or isn't a good or bad Port. I simply know what style I like so far and that's tawny. None of the Ports are dry(they are fortefied dessert wines)and while the vintage, late bottle vintage, and ruby's are frutier, I like the buttery consistency of the tawnys. A most worhtwhile endeavour, the trying of Ports.

Non alcoholic-any great tasting coffee.

MK's got it with the Sidecar, another drink that's been a bit bastardized over the years so you may not get what it's really supposed to be:

8 parts cognac (use your favorite - I prefer Courvoisier)
4 parts lemon (fresh and STRAINED lemon juice)
1 part Cointreau

I can't express how important ratios are. And as with any cocktail, make sure you FREEZE the glass. A cocktail should be served as cold as possible but WITHOUT ICE. And, no. there should be no sugar rim on this cocktail, despite the propensity of bartenders to add it.

Another lost favorite is the Pegu Club Cocktail

2 parts gin
1 part curacao
1/2 ounce lime
DASH angostura bitters
DASH of orange bitters (hard to find but well worth it if you can get it)

And while we're at it: The real Manhattan which is always made with RYE whiskey and not bourbon.

2 parts RYE
1 part Sweet Vermouth
DASH of Angostura Bitters
1 Maraschino Cherry

And yes I'm going to be didactic here because as you can see in my pic cocktails are a passion of mine.

1) The glasses are NOT martini glasses. They are COCKTAIL glasses, meaning you can make all sorts of COCKTAILS in the glass. All (real) martinis are cocktails but not all cocktails are martinis.

2) it's pronounced MA-RA-SKEE-NO and not MA-RA-SHI-NO

Now go out and drink,

My two cents, my two drinks

For the golden age I would a Moscow Mule for a hard drink and a fountain coke for soft drink: lemon or cherry coke.
As a side note, when people ask if I drink I'm not sure how to answer. I have about one alcoholic beverage a year so technically I do, but people usually mean regularly when they ask. Even more technically, I drink daily: water, Kool-Aid, etc.

Not really alcoholic: A good lemon, lime & bitters. So many places now just can't make them - they use cheap lemonade (really Sprite) and syrupy lemon & lime flavoured cordial instead of juice or juice-based cordial concentrate. Yuck!

Alcoholic: I'm a plain gal who prefers plain drinks, although cocktails can be fun sometimes. I don't like anything too sweet or cloying, at least not for more than one glass.
- Good quality dark Rum (usually neat, sometimes with lime, never with coke)
- Stone's Ginger Wine
- a nice Brandy or Cognac
- My Goodness, My Guinness! :beer: (Or any other decent stout or ale that you chew instead of drink!)

Although vodka goes with almost anything if you're desperate... ;)

I've never been a fan of any alcoholic beverages, so I would choose Dr Pepper as my favorite Golden Era beverage. For those who doubt, Dr Pepper was invented in 1884......a year before Coke's 1885 birth.
