It was never really the outer beauty with her(though she has it)... She just has that attitude... that presence. Strong willed, very much an alpha female.
The only reason my wife isn't jealous of Myrna Loy is because she's dead. The pictures posted show part of why. (Lauren, great picture. It's from back when Myrna Loy was playing "exotics" like Fu Manchu's daughter)
She had elegance, charm, humor and was the "whole enchilada" to use modern parlance.
P.S. Lauren and other ladies, what guys would you pick?
Oooh... tough. I don't think I can wittle it down to one. Can I make a mesh?
*Dresses like Cary Grant
*Walks like Jimmy Stuart
*Sarcasm and wit of William Powell
*Dances and sings like Fred Astaire
*Determination of Clark Gable
*And throw a little Gene Kelly nonchalantness in there for good measure.
...Ooooo. Cary Grant, mostly. (It depends upon which films I've seen recently, I'm so fickle!)
I always wanted to be Lauren Bacall when I grew up. Then I never grew up, so I just had to be me instead.
Matt Deckard, do you know how Emma Peel (another of my heroines) was named? She replaced the pretty and athletic Honore Blackman, and the production exces wanted to find another actress with what they called "M Appeal," to hold the attention of gentlemen.... Now that's coy terminology -- shades of the "it" girl!
One woman from the Golden Era? Jean Harlow, no contest.
She is the only blonde that I have ever had eyes for.
Matt: Emma Peel, very nice. However, since there is only one of her and two of us, I will opt for a 'knock off'...give me 99 (barbara Feldon) from "Get Smart"
Max: "That's all right Susan."
99: "It's 99, Max. Susan isn't my real name."
That lady doing her bits for the troops of the 5th AAF. This photo just melts me, as she has that "gal next door" look that I just adore. You could dress her up in a pair of dungarees and stick her in the middle of a Kansas twister, and she'd still come up smelling of roses
This is my other nurse, by the way! all on prescription.
I really don't know who this girl is, other than she was training to be a WASP (ferrying planes from factories to air bases..etc).
A very ordinary girl, doing extaordinary things for her community and her country. I'm smitten!! ha ha.
But that healthy, natural glow, totally untainted by make-up, wind in her hair, abit of aircraft oil on her hands, just "does it" for me. I'd have her down in the local restaurant in her wee flight suit and oily cheeks, wining and dining her at the shake of a lambs tail!
It's abit like when I go house hunting guys, you walk in and something in your tummy just tells you that it is right and meant to be. Can't put your finger on it neccessarily, but then why do you have to. It's just right.
OK, off my sappy soap box, and give the rest of you a chance!
The actress I always TIVO when I see her name come up on TCM is Myrna Loy. I know that doesn't really count since I'm female. As for the actor I would most want to take me out for dinner and dancing, it's a toss up between Cary Grant and Clark Gable. Clark Gable was my first crush when I saw Gone with the Wind for the first time in the 6th grade.
