An odd situation. Anyone know what this is from? Training video? Combat? Both look supremely surprised, makes me think it's not staged.

The thrower looks like a Fallschirmjager. A case of almost friendly fire?

The thrower appears to ba a Brit. It looks like his helmet is the " Turtle shell " model which appeared around Normandy. It also appears if the thrower has a '44 pattern canteen flopping on his left hip. The German is dressed as if he were in Garrison. If it's not staged it might be Normandy or Holland .

My first impression was also that it was a british paratrooper - what really puzzels me is the garrison uniform of "the german" soldier.
In all the pictures I have seen german troppers never wear garrison dress when fighting the enemy.
I think it's a staged thing. A trainingfilm in close combat, maybe.
Just my two cents.

My first thought was that the thrower was British airborne, hence the file name.

But if you look closely, you can see he is wearing a large belt buckle that reflects light. British airborne didn't wear this type of buckle, but Fallschirmjagers did:

Also, it appears he is wearing a smock that closes around his legs much like the type used by Fallschirmjagers (also note that the canteen looks like the German type, even with the attachment point for the leather strap at the bottom of the canteen):

British airborne worn regular style jump jackets that didn't attach around the legs:

British AB uniforms were almost a direct copy of the Fallschirmjagers. I read that somewhere eons ago. There was one Operation I forget which one where both Brits and Germans used the same DZ. They both mistook each other for their fellow troopers. The Dennison Smock that the Brits used had a flap that went between their legs. This was to prevent the Smock from riding up during a jump. The flap had snaps to secure it to the front of smock. They did not have any to secure them out of the way after the jump. They just hung down in the back. It's where the Germans named the Paras " Devil with Tails ".
