I Agree, I don't like man made or fleeces either, I have bought great heavy sweaters, from several of the firms mentioned here, including chunkies and ganseys from Sou'West Chunkies, Forces "Woolly Pullies" from Outdoor knitwear and raf/submariners from Silvermans, Grand Prix legends & ace cafe who also have great websites and knitwear, I also wear traditional heavey Guernseys from Guernsey. Smart Turnout also have excellent wool cricket sweaters.

In the present spell of cold weather we have here in the Uk, these sweaters are getting plenty of use.

If you search through this forum, there are sections regarding Fishermans Sweaters, Woolly Pullies, Guernseys and in WW2 section there is a thread about the Submariner/Royal Airforce roll necks.

Hope you get some sweaters that you like. Rgds.

I wore "wolly pullies" in the T.A. in the eighties and quite frankly they were trash. Today I'm a builder and wearing an Austrian army surplus boiled wool jumper that I picked up off the main auction site. I can't sing their praises high enough as a work jumper, highly wind resistant, good water resistance and super warm (the collar buttons up as high as your ears). Now even a cheap fleece will just out perform this jumper, but it won't feel as good nor look as well. Throughout the winter I like to wear an Arran jumper with a family pattern on social occasions or a spangely Fair Isles, but you'll also need something wind resistant to accompany them if you're going to spend much time out of doors.

Old Town have recently added this jumper:

it's inspired by Edwardian-20s knitwear, but with a slightly smaller collar.

I have a fantastic sea green Harris wool roll neck. It's designed for being stuck on a far-flung location which is battered with every type of extreme weather. Comes to you stiff as a board, and had to be tamed through constant use. It's heavy, heavy wool, the same stuff to make the island's tweed, but softens up after a couple of wears, so you can wear it over t-shirts.

this is a scan of one of my own vintage photos showing similar jumpers. (this is a touch larger than actual size):

these are more for chilly English summer days than serious winter wear.

I really like the thick ones in the middle close up. I soppose it would be possible to commission someone to knit one. Just a question of modifying an existing pattern a bit.

thank you for the comment, so glad that you are pleased with you Harris Wool Jumper. The jumpers are hand knitted using the same wool that is used in the weaving of Harris Tweed making them a very durable garment, and yes you must tame it..:)

It looks like a waffle stitch in the pattern.. I've done a similar jumper but the collar was split at the side for some reason the guy wanted it at the side.

These sweaters look great, I may have to invest in one of the Harris Roll necks.

I find this really hard to understand as I've worn a succession of woolly pullies since I was 11 (I'm now 47) and found them unmatched in comfort and ruggedness. It's possible to get them in a range of colours from Outdoor Knitwear and so I have several and really enjoy wearing them regularly.
Throughout the colder months I wear Woolly Pullies or Guernseys, mainly, and sometimes ribbed fishermen's sweaters. I have never worn a fleece of any kind and have no wish ever to do so!

I've been happy enough with an Outdoor Knitwear Submariner - they're quite large for the labelled size (not just long, but large all over) and I was disappointed to find the colour was much more of a yellowy cream, than the off-white colour the photos suggest, but it's warm and well made.

My favourite winter sweaters are hand-knitted Inverallan ones, but they do cost...

Sometimes with any sort of knitwear you do need to buy a size up or down to get a fit that really suits you. As well as Outdoor Knitwear, ACE Cafe in London, Silvermans also in London and Grand Prix Legends who are near Guildford in Surrey, sell the Submariner Roll Necks in Ecru-Off white and Navy and they are very good. I was wearing them a lot during this extended winter that we had here in the UK, along with a Guernsey and Woolly Pullies. Grand Prix Legends only this week sent me an e-shot for their Submariners.

Yes I agree with you, in my opinion, you can not beat a real wool sweater.

Silvermans is the Outdoor Knitwear one made by them, as are some of the others you mention. I bought one direct from Outdoor Knitwear's site last year and it was a lot cheaper than the retail outlets. But the price has gone up a bit since I see. I did exchange a couple of emails with them when I bought it and he said his retail customers would not like it if he undercut them too much by selling direct so that's why he's put his prices up a bit I expect.

It's still a bit cheaper buying from them though, and they have an eBay presence now as well.
