I Think I'm Starting a Trend

I just started wearing a hat, I started with an Akubra Angler and I liked it so I purchased an Akubra Stylemaster and have been wearing it to work daily. At first I was just wearing it in the car and then I just said "what the heck" and started walking around in it.

Anyway my boss today switched his office for a cube so another person could meet in his office so I had a good view of his desktop. I'm not nosey but at times your eye looks up and catches what is in view, I couldn't help but notice him shopping for fedoras online.

I've also noticed one other guy who used to wear fedoras when I first started working there began wearing it again. Maybe it's a coincidence but I think I'm starting a trend.

That's a good thing.
People who know me are aware that I have nice hats and wear them. They may like them and tell me so but most everyone I know wears sweats, t-shirts, tennis shoes, ball caps. Not that there is anything wrong with that, they just aren't going to change. Around here people dress like they did in the 1st grade and never change for the rest of there lives. I hope I may influence someone to wear a Fedora.

Sounds like you are in a fortunate situation, but I would not read any more than what it is where you are at. 'Till Justin Beiber and his sort start wearing full-fledged Fedora's and twenty somethings take it up as "the" way to dress it's no more than what it is BTW, your Stylemaster really looks good on ya ! Keep wearing it and enjoying how you feel

I was in your shoes just a few months ago, wearing flat caps and gaining the confidence to wear a fedora in public. Once I began to forget I was wearing a hat I began to get some compliments and now people expect to see me in a nice fedora. I doubt we'll convert many from baseball caps but that isn't my concern anyway. You look very comfortable in that Stylemaster.

I dunno, guys. I needed to run over to Nordstrom's today (only place close by where a man can buy a decent dress shirt and tie) and walked by a shop called "Lids". Normally the place is wall-to-wall ball caps but today, wonder of wonders, a quarter of the store was stingy brim hats. Now stingy brims are absolutely, positively, not my style but they are a definite step up from what is called out in farm country "Feed Hats". Perhaps there is hope.

I don't know that fedoras and real hats ever make a come back to the point where they are daily wear for most men, but I always wore hats prior to wearing a fedora or my angler they were just ball or knit caps. Looking at it now I can see how strange and out of place it looks wearing business attire to work with a knit cap or a ball cap.

I don't see a reason why men can't have the option for a real hat, I think the more people see it the more it is adopted.

Where I am teens and 20 year olds wear skinny jeans and t-shirts 3 sizes too small, I don't know any 30 and 40 year olds taking fashion trends from teens and 20 somethings.

Do a "fedora friday" and pass word that on friday everyone should wear a fedora. Sounds crazy but I am the only guy at work that wears a tie every day, so I started "ugly tie friday" and pass out a snickers bar to the person with the ugliest tie. It has become very popular!

I've been wearing nice hats in public for about three years now and always enjoyed it. I remember my Grandfather wearing a nice fedora all the time when he was dressed up. I started wearing a Tilley hat (fedora style) everyday at Home Depot and it really has "defined" me at that store. The district manager has even commented on Terry "The Hat" at store 1967. I can't wear a nice felt due to the type of work I do but the Tilley is perfect for it. My job is "Millwork Specialist" and I design all the Special Order windows and doors along with making all the arrangements for installs and measures. My evaluations are based on my "Sales Per Hour" but I don't get paid on commission. People NEVER remember names and lose my business card before they get back to their car. Some customers don't even remember the sex of their salesman after a couple of weeks but EVERYONE remembers "the guy with the hat" or "Terry The Hat!" It has worked well for me and serves two purposes. I sell more doors and I get to wear some of my favorite hats on a daily basis.

I've also noticed that there are more and more people coming into the store wearing actual "hats" instead of baseball caps. Even Walmart is selling the cheap little stingy brims. At least they are promoting hats and the interest is picking up. I always try to speak to a hat wearing customer or at least give them the "hat nod" as we pass. Kinda like the "biker wave" that most motorcyclists do when they pass each other on the road.

I look at it as being a realist.

Real fedoras will never be uber-popular again because of cost (too high) and image (too old). Regardless, I admire thos eof us who aim high with our head wear, regardless of naysayers. When people see me outdoors without a hat sometimes I am either not recognized, or I'm questioned (Hey, where's your hat?).

DrV, you look very good in your lid of of choice there.

I've noticed several students on campus wearing stingy brims and flat caps this fall. This is an improvement over the ball caps IMO. I've also noticed several of the faculty and staff are starting to wear fedoras (mainly wide brims) and flat caps. It's interesting to walk across campus and have a colleague look at me in my hat and then get a confident look about the hat he is wearing.

As far as starting a trend, last year I wore a bow tie to church and had a few guys make compliments. Since then, I've seen those guys and others wearing bow ties. I'm not sure that I'm a trend setter, more of a stereotypical non-conformist.
