I need some hat help, please. I have not seen a "Made in" stamp on any of the old hats. Can someone make out the lettering? I'm seeing something like:

MADE IN S, A or R, W, R or B or A, Y

Now there's an idea! Wow! Better eyes than mine sure can help. The bad news is that my eyes are not getting any better. Thanks guys.

Now the question becomes, is there other evidence that Stetson branded bowlers of that era were made in France and, if so, what company might have been the manufacturer?

If I relax my vision I see “FRANCE”.

I thought I was the only one!

Im on the lookout for VERY tall fedoras, but my searches just get large sized hats. I want it to be regular horizontally, but radically vertical. Please help.

I think you need to better define what you are looking for. What do you consider a “very tall” hat? Is there a specific style or dimensions you’re looking for?
I was thinking of responding with a reply: "I can make you one with an 8" crown. Is that 'tall' enough for you?" Might not leave much felt for the brim but the crown would def be tall!

It’s a Stetson Royal (Royal is the bottom of their quality rating for a fur felt hat) and it was made in Canada under license from Stetson. Stetson and others did this to get around paying import duties.

If the leather sweatband isn’t hard or otherwise damaged, you can fold the leather back and there should be a manufacturer’s label glued to the felt that is behind the leather. That label should have the size and give us other details.

The quality of the photos you provided will make it difficult to tell you much more. Was there something specific you wanted to know about the hat?

I picked this up at a thrift store. It simply intrigued me, and it was cheap enough that if it's nothing, I can afford the loss. I think it's genuinely old...I believe it could be an army campaign hat? Not sure of the era or anything else about it. Maybe it's a Halloween costume....but then why bother with the cool label that nobody will see? Google isn't helping much. Neither is eBay. I'm open to any and all opinions. Thanks!

Well that’s certainly different. I don’t know anything about it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there wasn’t someone here who can help: be patient.
