Just shamelessly promoting my hat for sale. :)

As for your questions, it all depends on what you like. If you like the look then what else matters...unless you’re married than she is what matters. I’ll say that bigger guys, of which I am one, tend to look better in hats with more square inches of felt than your typical stingy brim fedora. Jazz clubs back in the day certainly had some wide brim/tall crown patrons; musicians too. Stingy brims with their frequent low crowns look best, in my opinion, on our svelte brethren.

Lots of truth to this. Thanks for the sanity check...

If you’re “only” an XL, you should fit some “smaller” hats. Have you tried on some soft (non-western) hats in smaller sizes? If you could fit a 7 5/8, there’s a great hat at a reasonable price in the classifieds; it’s on the stingy side, but not too far.

And it’s not even mine. :)

I wear a 7 7/8 or 8 in Tilley, New Era and Akubra (size 63) hats. I am astonished that XXL and XL sized hats from makers like Dobbs and Brixton fit me. Some of their on-line sellers caution that these manufacturers tend to be oversize.

Hello everyone. I am brand new to this site. I asked to join because I have several hats I have collected over the years, that I will be asking everyone information, and their advice on. So.. lets start with this one. The tag says the style is FS 147, and it's a black Renegade Stetson fur/felt. There are no x's on the band. Size 7 3/8. I can't find this style of Stetson anywhere on the internet. Would anyone have any idea as to it's age, and value. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bill

Hi, does anyone know what brand of old hat this is? It’s been suggested that it may be American? It no proof of that. It’s my favorite old beater, it’s missing its sweatband, has cool kind of snowflake vents and a 3 1/4” brim and crown stands about 4 1/4”.
It had a wind strap thingy but it’s gone.
Does anyone have any clues to what it might be?
Cheers, Eddy :)

Hey Eddy, I think you’re one inch off on your brim size. :)
Good looking hat that any of us would like to have regardless of who made it. Sew in a sweatband and get that hat into rotation!

I didn't really get an answers about barmah hats specifically, so I am wondering which outback hats you guys recommend for a hot climate? I'd be looking at something in the $50-100 range. Preferably from an Australian company since they seem to have good reputations. None of that mesh stuff, I think it looks silly.

We don’t see this style of hat around here much. I suspect that there are a lot of people like myself who have ball caps, boonies, Tilley hats, etc. that just aren’t posted much since they aren’t exactly what this forum focuses on.

Have you looked at the Filson tin cloth brush and packer hats? I have one somewhere and it was/is a good hard wearing hat that can take a beating.

We’re way outside of the Golden Era so I’m not sure what kind of response you’re going to get. The Fedora Lounge wasn’t intended to be a clearing house for all information related to hats, but it never hurts to ask.

Yes, when the weather turns too hot for fur felt I put on a Panama. Great hats for the heat but not particularly hard wearing nor cheap.

I’m partial to Milan as it seems to be more forgiving of rough treatment compared to toquilla straw. Still, it’s not roll-up and shove in your pocket tough like a Tilley. I’ll also say that the polypropylene hats by Akubra are tough, affordable, and cool wearing all while offering a Panama-esque style.

You have hit on a topic that has been discussed around here before. Yes, hats are inconvenient just as is dressing in a full suit, vest, and tie to go shopping or to the library. Yet many of us do so because we love hats; the functionality, the look, and the craftsmanship of vintage or custom hats (or suits or whatever) that has largely been lost to the so called "progress" of mass production sameness... and often cheapness. If you are looking for convenience, stick with cargo pants, tee shirts, ball caps, and shoes that latch with velcro.

I've seen quite a few review saying the Filson is great for rain but terrible for heat. lol I didn't realize we had a gold era for hats. I just read that Kirk Douglas is one of the last surviving actors from the Golden Era of movies. I didn't realize we had one of those either, and I certainly wouldn't think the Gold Age of movies was over by 1970. That said when I do wear my large brim hats around, on the bus, in the car, or just sitting in the post office, they can be cumbersome, since the brim often hits things and I don't have a place to put it. The ultra-orthodox around here, wear hats with huge brims even during the hottest part of the summer on the bus and everywhere. Inconvenience never seems to hold them back. But for anyone who has ever seen Fiddler on the Roof would know that tradition comes first in their community.

But anyways I just specifically want an outback hat. I don't really need one. Just that hat in the camping store looked cool and brought back nostalgic feelings for crocodile dundee.

For some reason I imagined Ireland being always cool and rainy. I'll definitely check out a Panama hat style when it gets hot again.
I am living in Vancouver Canada, somewhat similar to Belfast.....lots of rain, mild climate and only about 4 weeks of heat a year so Panama head time is limited. I travel south in order to give my Panama hats more opportunity.

I did order a Tilley T3 off amazon. At 59cm it was too small for me, and the material was very filmy, the brim would not stay up. I couldn't believe it was an $80 hat. It had the quality of $30 hat no name from China, and it has the feel of a cheap denim material. It was the only hat I eve went through the hassle return via mail order. Too bad cause I remember the classic Tilley's looking high quality at Cabela's back when I used to live state-side.
Yes, since Tilley sold out to a conglomerate they switched from Canadian manufacturing to offshore and the quality nose dived but the price point stayed the same.

I'd recommend you watch eBay for a hat in your price range. An Akubra cattleman might be the right one for you.

Only you figure out what works for you in your weather. If you like it, it's a great hat.

The dirty little secret is that quite a few folks here have hats collecting dust that they don't like or maybe their tastes have changed.

I too am a size 63, but I've found that this has been a blessing in a way as it's kept me from ordering online a lot of inferior hats, being that the larger manufacturers tend to shy away from anything larger than a 7 5/8. Stetson only makes size 63 hats in a very few models, and from what I've seen of them in the flesh (so to speak) I've realized I'd be way better off going to a custom hatter. The only one of the larger makers I gladly patronize is Akubra, who make a very nice product at a reasonable price - and in a size 63 in the models I prefer.
I think if you spend a bit more time here you'll find that there's very little "orthodoxy" of the kind you seem to be suggesting.: rather, you'll see comments by a group of individuals who are more concerned with the quality of hat-making, whether in the long past or in the present, and in the utility of hats on a daily basis.
