Goose, I love the pic of you in that Hampton. I am wanting my first Akubra in a good taupe sort of color, to go with casual and up to this side of a sportscoat. I am afraid that there would be too much crown for the Fed IV compared to my Stetson Saxon, and the Hampton and the Stylemaster are choices as well. Suggestions?
Thank you MemphisLawyer....
The Hampton is 4.25" at the front and 4.0" at the rear.
My Federations are 4.25" at the front and 3.75" at the rear.

I do not have a Stylemaster. My noggin seems to do better in non-taper.

So, what did you end up deciding upon?

Got the Stylemaster in on Friday and have worn it a bit since then. Will get a pic of me in it up in the New Hats thread. Still undecided if it is too much brim, but Wife never said anything and people like me in the panama hat I have, so maybe my Saxon is not enough brim!!

Can't go wrong with the Stylemaster. Great hat. It is a more modern fedora and looks great with modern suits. I've got one as well as a couple of Fed IV Deluxes (brown and moonstone). Fed is slightly better in strong sun given the brim is wider fore and aft, but both are good felt and popular here in Australia.

Cheers mate and enjoy the hat!

Just a heads-up: I am going to be listing a brown Fed IV Deluxe (60cm) in the Classifieds tomorrow. I bought the hat early this summer, wore it once or twice, and it just does not work for me. The hat is freshly blocked by Henry the Hatter in Detroit.

I get more comments on my Moonstone Fed IV Deluxe than any of my hats.

I just got my Moonstone Fed IV standard today. I plan to wear it a lot this next week to break it in. We'll see what people think.

My newly arrived Fed IV. I had some sizing concerns when it first arrived and some nice folks on the Lounge talked me through that. I had to use the provided foam tape under the entire sweatband. Happily it seems to be snugging up nicely now.

I just bashed it today. I dry bashed it last evening to get an idea of what I wanted and then this morning I ran a cool mist from the shower head to the top and sides of the crown and I found it sculpted fairly well for a "newbie" like me.

I also put a roll of dimes under the front of brim and a roll of quarters on the top of the brim overnight and let gravity do its work. It gave a gentle dip to the brim. Of the four Akubras I own it is definately my favourite colour.

:eek:fftopic: I know its off topic but has anyone heard from Goose lately? I've missed his wit.

About a week ago he posted in the musicians thread. He was playing maracas in Puerto Vallarta and wearing a sombrero. :)

I also had sizing issues with mine - bought it 1cm too big, as Akubra suggested, and it was HUGE.

Keep in mind that these hats are super-solid - they can withstand about anything you can throw at them. Mine just wouldn't bash the way I wanted, using steam, etc. But one good rainstorm and now it looks/feels superb. Basically, I stayed in the rain until it was good and wet, then conformed it to my head. It will definitely get more playing time than any other hat this winter.

Love my Fed IV (carbon grey as in avtar) and I agree that a good dunking can make a difference. I'm heading bush in a few weeks and plan to take mine for a dip in the clay-bottomed Darling River.

I reckon after a good dose of muddy water+sunshine+sweat she and I will become one.

...in a strictly platonic way!

I've been wearing my 8 panel cap as my daily hat lately, but the past few days it looked like rain so I wore my FedIV when out walking. Just as well, the rain as been bucketing down (despite forecasts to the contrary, well done meteorology) and with my greatcoat (also felt, as it happens) and Federation IV despite being covered in water I remained virtually untouched by unwelcome moisture. I love my Federation IV.
I would post a picture of a thoroughly wet, yet still resplendent, hat but my family appropriated my camera for their inspection of The Continent.

You can do it!( spoken in arnies accent)

Im with you guys, stick that fed IV on your noggin and give it every thing you can think of , I wear mine for pretty much every thing I do, mowing the lawn, working in my guitar workshop, taking the dog to the water front, going to the folk club, any meeting I may need to attend and then nodding off in front of the telly. Give it heaps, they love it, live it, wear it, love it!
