I know that the brim is longer front to back but it is so small that I don't even care. My moonstone gets worn alot.

What color is it ? What size is it ? How much do you want for it ? I love the Fed's

It probably won't fit many of you.

It was sold to me as a size 7, but it is a bit sloppy for that, so I'd say it'd fit a 7-1/8, too. It is the dark brown version, whatever that color is called.

I may just contact the guy that sold it to me.

I haven't decided. I have to get at least $90 out of it s that is what I paid for it.

Tommy that bow looks great! In my opinion that is the one place the Fed IV is lacking but you did a nice job on the rework. Looks much classier.

Yet Another Thread on the Federation IV, but with a twist.

Okay, so the set up is this:

I'm just looking around and doing research on hats. Currently looking at the Akubra FedIV in dark brown and moonstone grey. My plans after than is just a center dent bash with the "Raiders" turn or 4 point diamond bash ala Bogart with the Raiders turn. Not sure yet.

Looking around on the lounge, I found some threads that spoke about the FedIV. Those appear dormant at the moment.

I wanted to ask a question specifically about the dark brown FedIV. How is the stock hat? Because my main point of focus on the dark brown hat is the bow and it's color. I'm not the clearest when it comes to asking for stuff. How brown is the bow? Does it appear that brown on hatsdirect.com because of the photo? Is it actually darker in person? Is there a contrast between the bow and the hat body?

Not close to buying one, but anything helps for when I do get close to pulling the trigger on those two hats.

Yes stock bow, and they're only a few months old so no felt fade.

This is all the more reassuring.

Also (I hate to smother you with questions, sorry!) how is the felt itself when it comes to shaping the hat? Is it like clay or is it going to take the power of the Lost Ark to get it to stay?

It's basically shapeable without steam, but a little steam holds it better. Shaping the crown is easy, but to get the brim curl it needed a little more work.

I am grateful for your help. Now all that needs to be in place is the price of the FedIV to go down a little bit more and I should be in a better position to pull the trigger.

+1 on what ManofKent and Rogera say about the moldability of the Akubras, the brim is a little on the flat side. They seem to soften a little with time as well. Price-wise they're a bargain, there can be some price fluctuation with monetary exchange rates so timing is everything. I did pay less for the Tawny one I got a few months ago than the Moonstone I got about two years ago, if I recall correctly. Moonstone is a great neutral color.

So that makes it a +2 on the hat's shaping? Haha. I've read about the brim having little to no curl. Though the price at the moment is a little to high. As of now, I believe it's $116.44 when I last checked. It's been slowly going down from the $123 it was a few months ago. If it goes back down to $100 like it was during the summer, I'd be more than thrilled.

Sometimes a hat will not shape well.
Just the nature of the beast...
If a hat does not shape... 20$ is not a deal.
But then sometimes it does shape and you will give more.
Like around 30$.
But summer is straw time so the price is most likely going to be down. Unless
the seller knows what he has and the price will be up.
But then again he may have straw, and thats a whole other matter unless its milan staw.

Well, it's more of what I can afford. Judging from everything I've read in this thread, the Akubra FedIV is a great buy for both the low price and the high quality. Just that the price right now is at a little over $116. The current price isn't as bothersome for me as it is for my dad. Even if I'll be paying for it with the money I earn. I just need/want two. Grey and brown. One for dressier attire, the other for everyday stuff with some instances where I do dress up a little bit.

Man $116 is a pretty good price. You'd better keep an eye on that.
The brim curl thing is not that big of a deal. If you want more curl, roll up the sides like on Last Crusade and the rest of the flange tends to follow. At least it did on my Fed. I like a good flange.
