I love the Fed IV!!

ahhhhhh man, YOU guys! I told my wife I was done with custom made for awhile, but I am feeling the "pull" of a FED IV really strong...

The Fed IV isn't custom made, so you wouldn't be going back on your word.

Also, I...wait...wait a moment...I'm getting a message from the great beyond. I see...I see...the moon? No, much smaller...it's a moonstone. Yep, I see a Moonstone Fed IV in my not-too-distant future.

I got mine in Imperial. I love the CD so much, I didn't want to gamble working with the higher end felt. I am sure its fine, but I buy Akubras for work and hobby work. Basically, I beat the snot out if them. The Imperial felt performs so well, I can't see spending the extra $.

Glad to know and see that. Looking at your pinches, I can see that they're not takin half those crown sides, in along with em.

Thanks Roger. Interesting. This is my first Fed. The bow and ribbon work is very nice. I do have an Akubra Safari, and the bow work on that one is sloppy.

Fed IV question...

What is everyone doing to the brim at the rear of the hat? Curling it up? Leaving it flat? Snapping it down for a safari look?

I find that's the hardest part of the hat to give a definable shape. If I recall, the hat comes not only in an open crown, but a flat brim. Shaping a flat brim without a flange isn't something I know much about other than trial and error.

I'd love to know what others are doing.

Beautiful Moon! I have mine in about that shape, but mine can get a little wavy. A little bit ago, I steamed it out flat on the kitchen counter and it naturally took that form. Maybe a little hairspray is in order. [emoji6]

I dont flatten the flange out. Keep it all around and snap brim down in front.

Moon, you nailed the crease job on that lid!

Dave my Fed brims were pretty flat when I got them but I like a nice flange. My brown Fed I have rolled the sides up some to make the flanging deep. My moonstone I have left about like moontheloon's which for the Fed is perfect.

Nice little rollup on those sides. I specifically asked The Hattery for a deep crisp flange and that's what I got. Sides roll up nicely just like yours and the brim snaps down with a short break. I dislike a big floppy brim that looks like a garbage can lid with a crown on top of it flopping down like wet cardboard.

I'm the same way for the most part. The cool thing about the Fed is you can have it either way. With the dimensional brim if you want a heavily swooped brim its easy to do.
